The arguments that the backstop provisions raise human rights issues in NI (the right to vote for your legislature under Art 3 of the 1st protocol to the ECHR) are actually quite strong. For reasons analogous to those I set out here. prospectmagazine.co.uk/politics/the-b…
But Carl is right that it isn’t clear how the additions Cox is apparently looking for are supposed to deal with that issue.
And one can sympathise with the frustration that the point is, apparently, suddenly being raised only now.

Read it. But a key point is that if the U.K. wants to change the type of Brexit it wants (she does not mention it, but an EEA/EFTA Brexit would fall into that class) she considers that ...
... the EU would be content with an extension - the extension would give time for the U.K. to sort out the outlines of what it wanted and to renegotiate the political declaration (which is definitely open to be rewritten if the U.K. wants to revise the Timothy/May red lines).

This is a fair analysis.
I’d add that it shows the folly of adopting a negotiating strategy without first securing the consensus you need to get it through Parliament.
It was evident from June 2017 that the PM could not build that consensus on just the Conservative Party + DUP, given the divisions in the Conservative Party and the (for her) disastrous election result. All you needed to do was to count.

Call a 2nd referendum (she doubts it’ll win)*

Take lessons from her mistakes in these negotiations when it comes to negotiating the future relationship.
