Tom Seaver's Hall of Fame ballot story is fascinating. At the time (1992), he had the highest election percentage in history (425 of 430 ballots, or 98.84%). Only Mariano Rivera (425/425, 100%) and Ken Griffey, Jr. (437/440, 99.32%) are higher. Why those five ballots? Read on...
Three of the ballots were left blank by writers in protest of Pete Rose's exclusion. One was filled by a writer recovering from heart surgery who wasn't aware Tom Seaver was eligible. And the last ballot was from a writer who refused to vote for candidates in their 1st year.
So, aside from the asshole who was apparently too good for the five year retirement minimum for candidates, Tom Seaver nearly garnered 429/430 ballots, or 99.77%.
