i'd like to offer that this is one way of reading it and one that I support. however, i would also like to argue for the the semiotic reading of the maga hat and its bearers.
in fact, it's a pretty straightforward interpellation--that is, the way we fit ourselves & others into familiar scripts--because, quite frankly, trump & the maga types want us to see their signs--hats, shirts, bumper stickers--& have a particular cognitive & affective response.
by cognitive & affective response, i mean to say the way it makes you think and feel. i'm pretty sure they keep yelling "build a wall," "lock her up," "america first," etc. to induce a particular response among opponents & especially minorities.

Social media gleefully disrupted the press & shared truth.

What we forgot was that the press & shared truth are an important foundation of Western democracy.

Without these, you can have other forms of govt (autocracy, oligarchy, theocracy etc.) but not real democracy.
It will be interesting to see the reckoning of all this.

It's all dandy when you're sitting in Mountain View & the money's rolling in & everyone's talking about "making the world a better place".

It's quite different when you realize what & who you've actually enabled.
"But that's what they said about radio!" say some folks.

Well, yes, radio was used for evil but it was generally govt vs govt propaganda.

Never in the history of the world have we had a time when random lunatics can spin conspiracies that millions immediately see & swallow.
