Tomorrow our updated “Giving in America” display about #philanthropy will go on view, but today we’re giving our followers a sneak peek. #AmericanGiving Three objects related to giving and health
The display takes a global approach. Diseases, treatments and cures, and resources cross borders, and Americans have long approached medical #philanthropy as members of an international community. #AmericanGiving s.si.edu/GivingHealth
For instance, concerned about Chinese Americans’ access to health care, activists in the 1970s organized health fairs. Their efforts grew into a community health center supported by #philanthropy and federal funds. Such health centers have roots in a South African health clinic. A flyer for the Chinatown Street Fair. Writing appears in both English and Chinese characters.
Such health centers have roots in a South African health clinic. In the '50s American medical student Jack Geiger, supported by the Rockefeller Foundation, studied the South African clinic and helped bring the model to the U.S. His grant application: #AmericanGiving #philanthropy An excerpt of Geiger’s grant application. It is pink and a black and white photograph of a young man is on the upper left hand corner
The global intersections of #philanthropy and health aren’t new. #AmericanGiving
In the 1780s, many doctors supported charities, called humane societies, which taught Americans how to save each other from drowning. The societies collaborated closely with foreign humane societies. #AmericanGiving #philanthropy s.si.edu/lifesaving
