Using G4S to force #Manus refugees to move is dangerous & provocative.
G4S had not been involved in Manus camps since they attacked refugees in 2014. Then G4S was contracted to run the detention camp on Manus.
In February 2014, G4S employees & others attacked refugees.
1/
Feb 2014 continued: At that time, PNG mobile police squad pushed over the perimeter fence, entered Mike compound & fired shots within the accommodation blocks. G4S personnel followed the police into the Mike compound & started bashing
detainees. 2/
In February 2014, during three days of attacks on the refugees by #G4S staff, local citizens & the PNG mobile police squad, 69 #Manus detainees were injured, some of them seriously, and an Iranian asylum seeker, Reza Barati, was killed. 3/
Two local employees, one of whom was a G4S guard, were convicted of the murder of Reza Barati on #Manus. Other suspects, including two expatriate G4S employees, left the country. G4S was accused of failing to assist PNG police in tracing those employees. 4/
The events of Feb 2014 were the culmination of significant breaches by #G4S of OECD Guidelines by G4S in relation to the administration of their contract & the conditions & alleged abuse of detainees at the Manus Island Centre. The contract ended, as scheduled end in Feb 2014. 5/
In the 6 years that refugees have been held captive by Australia on #Manus Island & more recently in Port Moresby, attacks by security, police & defence forces are too many to enumerate. Each attack caused serious physical & psychological damage.
Uniformed squads induce fear. 6/
Uniformed G4S squads enforcing #Manus refugees' removal from #PIH hospital is not only offensive but is dangerous & predictably results in extreme distress & exacerbates physical & mental health disorders that are directly related to previous attacks & injuries to body & mind. 7/
It's no surprise to hear increasing reports of heightened fear & anxiety, more suicide attempts, & more self-harm injuries by refugees of #Manus. Yesterday's raid by #G4S squads to remove sick men from PIH hospital Port Moresby was thoughtless or deliberately provocative. 8/
The #G4S Manus Island case study shows, there is little prospect of accountability when companies benefit from the abuse and are complicit with governments in undermining fundamental human rights. 9/ complaints.oecdwatch.org/cases-es/Case_…
Observers of Australia's Home Affairs contracts relating to offshore processing centres, please investigate what contracts Australia has with #G4S, a company with established disregard for human rights.
Is G4S contract like #Paladin's?
No tender, no oversight, many $millions. 10/
