More than 830 UK health professionals & representatives from leading medical bodies have signed an open letter to Sunak expressing “grave concerns” that the Govt’s #Rwanda Plan will cause “catastrophic mental & physical harm” to people seeking safety.

"As health professionals, we, the undersigned, are writing to express our grave concerns about the health implications of ongoing plans to forcibly remove individuals seeking protection in the UK to Rwanda, as set out in the ‘Migration & Economic Development Partnership’." Image
"Using this approach to advance hostile border policies rooted in unevidenced deterrence & externalisation objectives, despite clear documentation of the medical harm caused, is unconscionable." Image

Eso... eso que se ve ahí, es todo el país.... no le falta nada.

1/28. A serious issue has been bubbling under the surface at #COP27 and it's reaching boiling point as we near the final plenary: the importance of the Convention(@UNFCCC) and its ongoing role in @UN #ClimateChange negotiations. Here is why this is important for #LossAndDamage.🧵
2/28. In the informal stocktaking plenary last night, we heard many interventions from developing country Parties highlighting their concerns regarding efforts by developed country Parties to remove references to the principles of the Convention across all thematic areas.
3/28. Under the Convention, Parties agree to protect the climate system “on the basis of equity and in accordance with their common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities (CBDR-RC).” These are important agreed principles that must be preserved.

Tip for journos in #UK covering the proposal to send asylum seekers to other countries: the experience in #Australia has been that these off shore detention camps became secret. Although paid for by Australian taxpayers, access to the sites was almost impossible for reporters.
#Nauru, for example, charged an astronomical non-refundable journalist application fee & almost never granted the applications. Successive governments of #Australia then blamed the private companies running the centres and overseas governments for ill treatment of asylum seekers.
So Australian taxpayers paid millions and millions of dollars for asylum seekers to be held “off shore”, the government absolved itself for responsibility for the treatment of these detained people and there was virtually no independent accountability.

Short thread in relation to health issues experienced by human beings sent to #Manus who are currently in the #ParkHotel.
Many refugees contracted malaria, some multiple times despite given anti malarial drugs with terrible side effects.…
Typhoid was another disease that was often rampant in detention on both #Manus and #Nauru. They would not have been exposed to tropical illnesses if not sent offshore.…
Dengue Fever is another illness that asylum seekers and refugees were exposed to. #Manus #Nauru…

Great to see @anmfvic here in support of human beings who should not have been locked up in the first place.

Guys had symptoms and were sick for a long time before action was taken. One of the first guys tested positive was previously at the Kangaroo Point detention centre in Brisbane begging to be in a safe place when one of the guards tested positive there last year.

From the Government that brought you Paladin's beach shack on Kangaroo Island, this was the Pacific International Hospital's clinic on Manus Island that the Australian Govt paid $21.5million for, for 'Comprehensive Health Services'
The new Pacific International Hospital contract that started out at $12,781,783.21 in July 2019 has ballooned to $106,526,285.92 and has just had its contract extended another 6 months and amended a further $10,891,766.00...there are only 125 refugees left in Papua New Guinea.
Then we have JDA Wokman/Applus PNG They're contracted for "Settlement Services." Their original contract value was for $6,123,458.02. It is now worth $139,437,000.00. It too was extended a further 6 months and amended a further $17,857,000.00. Again, that is for 125 refugees.

Peter Dutton is not telling the truth about why #Manus & #Nauru refugees were released from The Park Hotel #ParkonSwanston. Costs have never been a consideration when Home Affairs has chosen detention onshore or offshore for refugees. Here are some 2020 figures: /1
•This year’s budget reveals that costs will increase by more than $300m in 2020-21 despite significantly declining numbers of refugees & asylum seekers. Australia will spend roughly $4 million for each of fewer than 300 people remaining detained in PNG (ex #Manus) & #Nauru. /2
•This year the average cost of holding just one person offshore is significantly more than it would cost to allow everyone remaining in PNG and Nauru to live in the community in Australia. /3

Dear @comcare_gov_au,
I have recently received a response to a #FOI request in relation to the #Comcare investigation into #mould at the #Nauru RPC. Reviewing my original email to yourself in 2018, I feel I may not have made one aspect clear enough.
I would appreciate it if you could clarify whether the incident of a contracted mould inspector (microbiologist) being asked to remove his PPE for the inspection and consequently becoming sick, was part of the @comcare_gov_au investigation into the mould issue
2/ the tents at the RPC on #Nauru or was treated as a separate investigation.
The FOI response I received on the 5th of June 2020 in relation to MC00004067, has plainly stated that Comcare never interviewed Dr Cameron Jones, the microbiologist in question.

The #IMF says the "Great Lockdown" recession will likely be the worst since the Great Depression. Global economy projected to shrink by 3% in 2020. By contrast, in January, the IMF had forecast a global GDP expansion of 3.3% for this year. Details in chart below. Table: @IMFNews
IMF: Partial global rebound to 5.8% in 2021 “assumes the #pandemic fades in the 2nd half of 2020, & that policy actions taken by countries are effective in preventing widespread firm bankruptcies, extended job losses, & system-wide financial strains.” #WEO

After the lies Dutton has been spreading today in regards to the Biloela family, I started reflecting on the first time I truly understood how dark and dirty this man can get. Remembering the lies & the Good Friday Shooting on #Manus Island
When the PNG Navy opened fire on the #Manus refugees on Good Friday 2017, Peter Dutton brazenly lied and said that no one had been injured, only one weapon had been fired in the air and then insinuated that it had happened because a young boy had been lured into the camp.
For nearly a month the department maintained that “no one was injured” and that the Papua New Guinean military personnel had discharged only one weapon into the air during the incident.

I'm doing an epic thread on the FACTS on the #MedeVacBill to bust all the myths being spread by the #Morrison Government. RT's are so appreciated. Here we go. #auspol #manus #nauru #morrison #dutton
MYTH 1: Two doctors will decide if someone is transferred

FACT 1: Actually 11 doctors decide this incl. an Independent Medical Panel that makes final medical recommendation made up of 9 doctors that incl. Surgeon General of Border Force, Home Affairs & C/w Chief Medical Officer
MYTH 2: The #MedeVacBill will encourage people to seeking #asylum by boat

FACT 2: The bill only applies to people seeking asylum on Manus & Nauru as of 13th Feb 2019 (& children born to them), anyone who arrives thereafter is not eligible for medical evacuation under this bill.

An epic thread. RT’s appreciated 🙏🏼

Debunking all the lies by #Dutton that medical transfer of sick refugees from #Manus and #Nauru to Australia poses a national security risk to Australia. #BackTheBill

I’ll go one by one through all of Dutton’s lies in plain English now:
LIE: This would be first time refugees brought from offshore without ASIO clearance to Australia.

FACT: Of the 810 sick refugees already brought to Oz under LNP Gov almost none have had ASIO clearance, most brought here by court orders within a few days and without incident.
LIE: Oz Gov would have no control over sick refugees brought here on medical advice

FACT: All would be placed in community detention which can range from guards outside a hospital room (standard practice) to being held in actual detention centre. It’s solely the Ministers call.

I wonder why The Republic of #Nauru has blocked me.
I don't think I have ever even looked at their page that is run by an Australian media firm, Mercer PR, in Brisbane with close links to the Liberal Party.

RT. The legislation @AustralianLabor will introduce regarding kids on #Nauru fails every critical test. The @ASRC1 is actually best placed to explain why as we are one of the organisations doing the work with the kids & families right now. Here's why it fails the kids. A thread.
1. It relies on Minister acting in the best interests of the child by formally making them final decision maker, they already are in reality & just hide behind "bureaucracy", this changes nothing. #Dutton will continue to block without court order, our experience dozens of times.
2. In requiring the Minister to make a determination within 24 hours on a medical transfer from Nauru, once that period is passed we will still have to rely on courts as no legislation exists to compel the Minister, his power remains non - compellable

this is a long thread on #nauru, where i spent last week. nauru is currently most visible as a site for australia’s offshore detention of asylum seekers and refugees. it is also the location of a longstanding #phosphate mine which covers over 2/3 of the island 1/22
#nauru is experiencing considerable #climatechange. im going to outline some of the social-environmental stresses i observed that nauruans, refugees and asylum seekers are facing, and why we need to talk about #colonialism and #environmental racism for #climatejustice 2/22
#nauru is a beautiful island. its main resource is #phosphate. germany colonised nauru in the late 1800s and in the early 1900s the british found phosphate and started to exploit it for fertiliser and munitions with australia and nz, who became nauru’s trustees in the 1920s 3/22

THREAD: About 900 refugees have been trapped for the last 5 years by the #Australia policy of offshore detention on #Nauru island. Their sole crime being seeking refuge by boat. As a result of these policy, many people attempt suicide or self-harm.
After providing mental health care in #Nauru for the last 11 months, @MSF was asked to cease its activities in 24h because its services were ‘no longer required’. This is totally disgraceful, the mental health situation on the island is devastating.
Our psychiatrists and psychologists have been shocked by the number of people thinking of or attempting suicide, with children as 9 years old saying it is better to die than live with no hope in #Nauru. Many children didn’t eat, drink and could not even walk to the toilet.

@SarahRubyWrites @jokowi In theory, Indonesia is responsible.
(#IDG=Indo immigration dept)
However, Indonesia is the 3rd country, with #Manus & #Nauru, that Australia pays to use refugees as 'rocks to block the sea'.
Aus pays #IOM to run refugee community housing & 13 detention centres in #Indonesia.
@SarahRubyWrites @jokowi #UNHCR Indonesia received less & less funding, none this year, to process refugees in Indonesia for resettlement.
Australia took this 'humanitarian aid' & gave it to #IOM to detain refugees to force voluntary returns.
Now IOM had funding cut, new refugees sleeping in streets.
@SarahRubyWrites @jokowi So big backlog of asylum seekers awaiting UNHCR processing due to no funds.
No new admissions to #IOM or even detention in Indonesia since April 2018.
Refugees queue to get IN to detention, live in streets outside IDC's. No money, no accommodation, live on handouts.

This retraction by @AlJazeera actually raises more questions than answers, and to my mind at least, brings to the fore, the fact that our Federal Republic of Anyhowness, has gone global...
Yesterday, asides @AlJazeera_World, other news outlets, including the Twitter only news outlet, @spectatorindex said that #Nigeria's ambassador had attended the opening of the American Embassy in #Jerusalem.
Isreali outlets such at @TimesofIsrael and @HamodiaIL also ran with the news. @haaretzcom actually went so far as to publish an infograph that included #Nigeria's name as one of the country's "celebrating with them" on the grand new opening...
