My hypothesis is the situation we're in today is the same one we've been in for months. A void of info from the SCO, and other sources filling it for their own reasons. Each prior time we've been here, the other sources had it wrong. Why should we expect a different result today?
I don't think we have reliable info that tells us whether Mueller has definite plans to leave to his post before the prosecutions he initiated are concluded, whether he plans to pass off his outstanding grand jury subpoenas, or whether he's done going through the Stone seizures.
We don't reliably know whether the investigation is over, whether more indictments are planned or possible, whether an interim report has been ruled out, or whether Mueller's plans to present his conclusions extend only to the past indictments and the report required by the regs.
It's frustrating not knowing all those things (exhilarating too)! What I think has happened is we've met the overwhelming demand to know by elevating those sources who are willing to speak, even if they're not in a position to know and not willing to put their names on it.
I'm tempting fate by posting this thread; I know that and it really is just my own attempt to make sense of what I know. If today is different, reliable news of a report drops in the next hour or eight, and mists begin to clear, then I'll happily take my lumps for being wrong.
But assuming I'm not wrong, and we head into another wknd in our familiar limbo, then we should cast a more critical eye on the sources who have fed these stories, try to learn their motives, and figure out a way to stop them from manipulating expectations through the press.
