Matthew Charles, a man sentenced to 35 years for crack & the first person released under the First Step Act, now can't find housing. A common problem. Post-release, a range of new punishments just begin. Including exclusion from housing by law & practice. washingtonpost.com/arts-entertain…
600k people are released from jails & prisons every year. Roughly the size of Boston or Seattle. Only to be subjected to further exclusion, supervision, & marginalization that make it impossible to truly be free. It’s Perpetual Punishment.
Good news: Mr. Charles *just* moved in last nt to new apt. But there are hundreds of thousands each year who don't have his fortunate limelight or support (financial & publicity) from a Kim Kardashian. Homelessness shouldn't be used as a punishment. fox17.com/news/local/for…

In real time, right now, lawmakers round the country are making the same gut reaction mistakes that created mass incarceration. A collection of illogical policies that makes us less safe, exacerbates the very societal ills it aims to solve, & costs a fortune all w/ zero benefit.
Long ago Hamilton warned of these retributive impulses. “The criminal code of every country partakes so much of necessary severity that w/o easy access to exceptions in favor of unfortunate guilt, justice would wear a countenance too sanguinary & cruel.” We still haven’t learned.
Literally just finished “Prisoners of Politics.” Ends w/ caution: It’s possible “significant portion of public may simply want to inflict pain on people who commit crimes.” But there’s an achievable “win-win to be had in justice policy-making if we can loosen the populist grip.”

Theres no right to counsel in immigration cases. Most asylum seekers must go against gov’t lawyers alone. Only 1.6% of parents w/ children prevail. Imm lawyers, when rarely funded, literally save lives. Asylum seekers are survivors. Go thru more in 1 day than Trump in a lifetime.
This is who he’s mocking. Meet Nilda. Born in Honduras. Survivor of brutal sex, domestic, & gang violence. Thought U.S. would protect her. Instead border agents stole her 2 yo son & detained her. Told her “This is what happens when you come to my country.”
This is who he’s mocking. Sindy & her 17-mo old baby Juliet. Also asylum seekers from Honduras. Fleeing gang violence that resulted in murder. Baby was detained away from her for a month. This is the scene from SFO. Listen to her cries. This is trauma.

EMERGENCY: The NYS budget goes to print in 24 hours & the Governor & legislature still have not included any money to continue one of their signature programs-the Liberty Defense Project, which gives immigrant NYers access to lawyers. 1000s risk losing lawyers halfway thru cases.
Just 3 months ago @NYGovCuomo announced expansion of program: “While the federal government wages war on immigrant families seeking the American Dream, New York is standing by our commitment to protect people from all backgrounds and embrace our diversity.”governor.ny.gov/news/governor-…
Over 30k have received legal services through program since *just 2017.* $10 million is small price to protect immigrant NYers from the Administration’s xenophobic violence & live up to our ideals. Legal services are critical to protecting our communities.

First, the House Judiciary committee passed the First Step Act out of committee on May 9 of this year, and the Senate Judiciary Committee passed the highly similar Sentencing and Corrections Act out of committee on Feb 15 of this year. These are not new policies. 2/
Second, and more importantly, the First Step Act does not “give early release” to anyone. Anyone claiming it does, does not understand how the bill works. 3/
