Letwin voted on first. No biggie, but the next 15 minutes could determine the rest of our lives
Get in! 329 yes, 302 no. Government defeated. The EU offered Parliament the right to take back control, and Parliament finally bloody took it.
Wednesday night is going to be an absolute corker.
It had better be good, because Thursday is my birthday and I absolutely do not want to be tweeting about fucking MV3 that evening.
Anyway Beckett is up in a few minutes, the amendment that guarantees Parliament a vote to put the emergency brake on no-deal if we’re a week away from it. I hope it passes because otherwise my op-ed tomorrow is going to be ambivalent af
Beckett loses! 311 in favour, 314 against. Parliament wants to take back control but sees no need to stop no-deal if the government decides to ignore Parliament and hurtle towards it. Seems legit. WTF could go wrong?
As so often, Parliament issues two completely contradictory messages in one set of votes. If May really does intend to complete her suicide mission, then Parliament will shrug its shoulders and let her. Hard to conceive of a more cowardly and self-defeating move.
Final motion passes 327-300. So two people voted for the Letwin amendment and then voted against the motion which enacted it. What did we do to deserve these people?
Anyway, Parliament’s voted to take back control. They’ll surely try to stop no-deal if gov ever lurches towards it. But my god it would’ve been easier if they’d just voted for Beckett too. Anyway, on with indicative votes: the first step towards resolving this one way or another.
A massive 30 Tories sensed urgency of occasion and voted for Letwin, including 3 ministers who resigned to do so and also Costa who resigned the other day. 8 Labour MPs, including Flint, Cooper and Barron, shamefully voted against- to give all their power to May. Amazing times.
Gareth Snell abstained on Letwin and voted against Beckett. John Mann did the opposite. Totally lost.
Still, the night belongs to Suella Braverman, who kept it in proportion on #newsnight just now by calling Parliament’s decision to take back control a ‘massacre’.
