Confirmed: Business minister Richard Harrington has resigned from Government over Brexit indicative votes
Industry minister - one of the key points of contact with business on Government savages failure of Number 10 to rule out No Deal as he resigns says it will “ruin livelihoods” and Governemnt “playing roulette with lives of vast majority” and resulting in cancelled investments
This is absolutely extraordinary 329 - AN Absolute majority capable of defeating any government whip - vote to take control of order paper from Government

This is a sign that some of the Governments own ministers have lost all trust and also all fear in its own Government....

They just don’t trust the promises and have had to resign to hand control of the order paper to backbenchers...

There certainly was pressure from eurosceptic press...
I remember live on Sky as the trigger decision was made, saying to Adam im not sure the MPs cheering this on realise that they have simply handed the stopwatch and so our main negotiating leverage straight to the EU
worth reflecting that both the judicial decision to underpin A50 trigger with statute “Enemies of the People” AND the meaningful vote process empowering Commons “Mutineers” - have worked out in ways that cd have helped Brexit backers, despite vicious attacks on those institutions

Motion being laid seeks to approve the Withdrawal Agreement - thus activating a new leave date of May 22nd.

Leaves open further changes to the political declaration. Government source says MPs can tell constituents who ask why we haven’t left on March 29th that we will on May 22
If tomorrow’s vote Yes then the Withdrawal Agreement Bill is published next week.
The process of how the Commons changes the Political Declaration is unclear but would have to act concurrently with ratification Bill - the WAB. Need for actual Meaningful Vote might be retrospectively repealed in WAB in some way, sources tell me.

It’s NOT MV3 being tabled for tomorrow - some sort of Brexit motion is being pencilled in though.
My understanding is that Lidington and Cox went into see Speaker at 830 this morning to try to sort it out. Doesn’t seem like it was enough for an MV3.
Meanwhile DUP source: “No negotiations today”.

If parliament backs a customs union in the indicative votes, why shouldn’t it back May’s Withdrawal Agreement?

First, let’s be clear: the backstop is a misleading name. In the absence of any known alternative, it isn’t a fall-back but rather the default.

On Monday, MPs approved Sir Oliver Letwin’s proposal to give control of the Commons Order Paper on Wednesday 27 March to backbench MPs so that they could hold indicative votes on alternatives to the Prime Minister’s #Brexit deal.
The decision to back ‘The Letwin Amendment’ was seen as controversial as it disapplied a Commons rule - Standing Order 14(1) - which says that the Government largely controls what business is debated in the House.

Short answer is its all pretty fluid, but here's what I think I know after usual chats with both etc (1/thread)
May will ask for extension to June 30, per reports.

Less clear if she will also say UK prepared to 'no deal' on June 30. That might be a key omission to watch, on which more later.

So will the EU agree? /2
Not necessarily. As @adamfleming warned this AM - and later confirmed by @JunckerEU interview - EU may say a short extension is "conditional" on May passive her deal next week (presumed new vote Mon or Tues)

That would be a reason for a short extension/3

1) Sir Ivan Rogers speech, a sobering & devastating speech from our former leading EU diplomat on #Brexit, its history and the UK position.

Should be read by *everyone* however I'll pull out a few key points in this thread

2) the UK already had the best deal of all EU member states. We may not have believed it but the other 27 nations did.
Anyone who thinks about this for more than 5 minutes would realise this
Cameron in fact managed to improve it further, but the press torpedoed his deal
3) the 4 freedoms are seen as indivisible by the EU27. Trucks & money having more rights to move than people is absolutely unacceptable to them. That's just a fact.
Anyone, Labour or Tory, who tells you we can get a great deal without free movement of people is lying to you

2) now, I've seen a lot of anti #Brexit people say "fair enough, Owen's right here, he makes some good points on the optics"

Let's examine one of the key points, where Owen advises Lord Adonis to resign his peerage and campaign for remain & also election
3) by this we must assume Owen advises all progressive peers resign their peerage (like Tony Benn) and look for proper election whilst campaigning for Remain.
