This thread on sexual harassment on academia is essential because its primary focus isn't on the perpetrator or his target, but on the rest of us and what we do once we learn what has happened.
I'm in awe of the guts it's taking for @intersectionist to come forward like this, and in the way she's doing it. But I wish more of us could show more guts when it's not us, but our colleagues, who are being harmed.
What we do about sexual harassment isn't just about—isn't primarily about—saying the right things in the moment. It's about taking action on an ongoing basis.
And yes, there are going to be costs to that. There are costs to that because the predators count on the costs to protect them. It's hard. It's terrible. It's unfair.
But the costs fall harder on some of us than they do on others. And if the costs don't fall hard on you unless you step forward, that's a reason to step forward.
