But powerful interests, including the entire Democrat Party and too many Republicans, DO deny it. The media is doing its best to keep the American people from understanding how bad it is. And nothing was done when it was possible to prevent it from happening.
It should be obvious by now that migration crises cannot be handled in a purely reactive fashion. It is vital to take steps to prevent them from happening, instead of waiting for the Border Patrol and Immigration to declare themselves overwhelmed.
Those agencies simply are not funded to deal with worst-case scenarios. It was not difficult for human traffickers and political operatives hostile to the interests of the United States to figure out how big of a surge they needed to overwhelm the system.
It was not difficult to round up the manpower for that surge once it became clear that children are the ticket to completely short-circuiting America's feeble border defenses.
A horrifying number of children have been trafficked and abused as a direct result of the Democrats' orchestrated "kids in cages" hit on Trump. Rarely has a U.S. political ploy led so clearly and directly to such immense humanitarian horrors.
And for all the claims of how Trump's order to cut aid to Central American countries will defund vital programs that keep migration down, the "kids in cages" signal was clearly far more powerful than all of those programs combined.
Whatever benefits those programs have, whatever messages they are sending, they were all completely overridden once the word spread that children are the golden ticket to crossing the U.S. border. The result was an immediate migrant surge that overwhelmed the American system.
The only way to prevent that from happening is to make it clear that migrant surges don't work. That message must be sent proactively, in advance, and it must be louder and clearer than whatever smugglers and political organizers are selling in Central America.
No U.S. anti-poverty program can magically transform El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras into places large amounts of people do not understandably wish to flee. No U.S. grant will magically give those govt's the power to control gangs. Those are delusional fantasies.
Those programs MIGHT be helpful IF the message is also transmitted, with overwhelming strength, that illegal immigration is too difficult to contemplate. The benefit side of cost-benefit analysis is currently written in golden ink, while the costs and risks seem manageable.
As it stands, we get huge migrant surges every time idiotic U.S. policies send the message that illegally crossing the border is relatively easier. Our political class always pretends to be surprised by the most predictable cause-and-effect relationship in the world.
There is no escaping the grim fact that a large segment of that political class actively WANTS mass migration, and it has largely intimidated or bought off the few that don't. "Border crisis" moments illuminate that truth because some of them still have the capacity for shame.
Just as the American people have no seat at the table when Big Government "negotiates" with public employee unions, so we have little real representation when the political class "negotiates" with itself over illegal immigration. We just pay the bills, with money and blood. /end
