The collapse of the Russia hoax WILL affect the 2020 election. Sure, partisans are dug in right where they've always been, but a lot of average people will be angry at Democrats and their media for lying to them. Unlike most GOP candidates, Trump will remind them to be angry.
The usual GOP playbook is to walk away from failed political hit jobs against them, no matter how egregious. They graciously agree with Dems that we should all move on and address the important concerns of the American people, yadda yadda yadda.
Conventional GOP wisdom says it's a mistake to keep talking about the failed hit because it still hurts the target - better to let it fade from public memory, show how "big" you are by reaching across the aisle, maybe impress a few centrist Dem voters with your statesmanship.
Donald Trump is obviously not going to do that. And he's not just going to hammer Democrats for wasting two and a half years of America's time - he's going to blast their pet media organizations for helping the effort. It WILL weaken the media's ability to sway voters in 2020.
It's the inverse of the normal GOP political advice to stop talking about a bad story, even if it proved to be untrue. Trump will keep talking about it because it makes the media bleed every time it comes up. He'll relish forcing THEM to talk about it.
And when the media groans that he's obsessed with "old news" and refuses to "move on," Trump will laugh and ask how that measures up against THEIR long obsession with "Russia collusion." He has a shot at disarming one of the media's best weapons: the "old news" memory hole.
All the better for Trump if the investigation of the investigators is chugging along and producing results damning to the Obama administration. You don't want to be Joe Biden running against Trump if that's how this plays out. /end
