This decision on Freedom of Information is another nail in the coffin of Ireland's access to information regime. It's vital that journalists, @NUJOfficial, civil society groups, and public join with @RightToKnowIE in resisting slow death of "our" FOI Act: thestory.ie/2019/04/03/jud…
There is a slow and steady whittling away of our right of access to public information that is being fought every day and at the moment, we are losing this fight. In cases involving the President, the law has been retrospectively changed to try and shut down requests:
In this latest case involving UCC and a similar related decision on eNet, the rules of Freedom of Information are changing before our eyes. Public bodies are picking up on this, refusing requests on grounds they would never have even tried to use before: irishexaminer.com/breakingnews/i…
If you think Freedom of Information doesn't matter to you, perhaps read this story about just some savings for the Irish taxpayer that resulted directly from FOI requests. Many of the most important stories of last twenty years have involved use of FOI: theguardian.com/media/2013/nov…
We live, when judged against standards of other western democracies, in a very secretive country. Our state regularly tries to pull us back from transparency. It happened in 2003 when the FOI Act was gutted; it nearly happened in 2014; and it's happening again now. Resist it.
If you want to do something really useful today, get #FOI trending and make the government sit up and take notice.
