Instead, how often do we hear MPs invoking the need to 'honour the referendum', 'deliver Brexit' and of course, act on 'the will of the people'. It is a fact that 52% voted to leave, and that they had very different visions of leave in mind. 1/

The European elections are, polls and common sense suggest, going to be a disaster for the Tories. They will surely do a lot to try to avoid them. Their survival instincts will kick in. A thread on the politics. 1/
The *only* way for the Tories to avoid the election is by reaching a deal with Labour on the substance of any Brexit deal; ie on CU, SM, and on Parliamentary control of the future relationship phase of Brexit. 2/
The Labour leadership may therefore be able to get the 'softer' Brexit it says it wants. It has a big choice: either take the Brexit which will be on offer, or hold out for something more. 3/

I continue to be perplexed by the lack of energy, and lack of focus, in the political debate on Brexit. We will, unless something happens, leave with no deal on... Friday. There are 2 urgent priorities for the UK. 1/
First, TM has to agree an extension. Any extension will require preparations for EP elections in May. The UK must commit to those, and must articulate a clear path forward, to persuade the EU-27 leaders to allow an extension. 2/
Second, MPs need to focus on what they can do if TM returns from Brussels on Wednesday night, either with no extension, or with an extension with conditions she is minded to reject. 3/

A new (to me, at least) way of thinking about the Brexit divide: the country is divided not only between 'leavers' and 'remainers', but also between those who want to get Brexit done; and those who think that we need more time in order to get Brexit right. 1/7
There are, it seems to me, some strange alliances/coalitions which are forming when the 'next steps' are considered from this perspective. 2/7
Those who want to get Brexit done fall into several camps. They may support no deal, the PM's deal, a people's vote, or revoking A50. They are not interested in seeking to find a 'better' Brexit. They want a resolution. 3/7

It's a mistake to assume Donald Tusk's words today in support of those in UK who want to revoke or to have another vote on #Brexit is representative of EU leaders, desperate for UK to remain in EU /1
When UK voted to leave, EU leaders hoped minds wld change. Macron - now seen as hardline Brexit negotiator -said "our door is always open". EU urged UK to specify exactly what Brexit it wanted BUT MPs only looking at this now. In meantime EU has got used to idea of UK leaving /2
EU main focus now is NOT hoping UK will stay. EU leaders believe #Brexit will be damaging for UK. Their priority now is preventing that damage from spreading ("infecting" as it's often said) the wider EU /3

After this crushing defeat of May's Brexit deal, a loss by 230 votes, she will face a confidence vote brought by Corbyn & Labour. She's pretty sure she will survive that vote but there is no clear path forward. 2nd referendum? Election? #Brexit

1. The impossibility of meaningful treaty reform. We cannot edit the supranationalist DNA of the EU
2. The exclusion of the public from decisions relating to further integration. See Treaty of Lisbon.
3. The way in which the EU will seek homogenisation and integration for its own sake and for that of EU ideology over practical necessity.

I am going to start a thread. Quite a few people have asked me why I voted to leave the EU. Although I don't feel like I have to explain myself there are a couple of things I think people fail to acknowledge about the #Brexit vote.
Over 30% of Labour voters voted to leave and about 20% of Green party voters did the same. Not all leave voters are UKIP or even remotely right wing. I am a Labour voter and sit firmly on the left of the political spectrum. #Brexit
Nobody knew what would happen if we voted to leave the EU. There was so much nonsense, from both sides, that it was virtually impossible to be "well informed" about #Brexit

1) Thread - All Brexits are bad and what we voted for
It's often said by brexiters that "it's not all about economics"
However, the *actual* Leave campaign was almost wholly about economic arguments

With the leak of this 2-8% report those arguments are now trashed
2) We seem to have forgotten this however economics played a huge part in the Vote Leave campaign, making up over 2/3rds of the primary arguements. The clear message was we would at the least be no worse off and at best much better off. 4 of the 6 below state this clearly
3) & the fact is voters believed we would be no worse off. People prioritized immigration certainly, but against a backdrop of there being no consequences from Brexit - few are prepared to actually pay for ending FoM
