With Team Mueller leaking to NYT and WaPo that Barr understated their case, seems people missed the AG's slight-of-hand.
Barr thinks POTUS can't commit criminal obstruction. And Mueller didn't charge him.
But Trump's not accused of criminal obstruction

The accusation against Trump is really abuse of power. Technically legal, but not faithful execution of the law, thereby violating the Constitution.
Obstruction was part of the Nixon and Clinton impeachment cases. Neither was charged with a crime.

Barr's legal reasoning is solid. DOJ, which is the in executive branch, bringing criminal charges against POTUS, who runs the executive branch, for firing the FBI Director, who works in the executive branch, wouldn't make sense.
But criminal obstruction isn't the issue.

Mueller didn't charge Trump with criminal obstruction, found evidence of abuse of power obstruction, and correctly left the question of what to do about it to Congress.
Barr letter clears Trump of criminal obstruction. And that's it.
See the slight-of-hand? Media fell for it.

Trump's accused of Nixon/Clinton-style obstruction. Public reports already show a lot.
Conviction needs 20 GOP Senators, so impeachment for obstruction is probably going nowhere.
Still, important for public to understand what's going on here. Barr didn't really clear Trump.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps is not a terrorist group. It's a state military branch.
The US can, and does, sanction the Revolutionary Guard without this label. The only point is misusing the word "terrorist" as a synonym for "bad."

The United States designating Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist group isn't the worst thing in the world. It'll bother me more than most because I teach about terrorism.
But still, it's dumb. All downside, no upside. Here's why.

State militaries aren't terrorist groups. Yes, they both use force to advance political goals. But their capabilities, options, strategic circumstances, and specific aims vary considerably.

This @BretStephensNYT column on Iran is so bad that I can't let it go.
Leaps of logic, strawmen, internal contradictions, and some actual facts too, which if anything make it worse, because then readers less familiar with the subject might buy it.

The first line is a strawman. Not a great start.
Critics of Trump's decision to break the Iran deal (including me) didn't say it would "bring nothing but woe." Rather, on balance, downsides outweigh upsides (many of which are wishful thinking, as Stephens will demonstrate).

Stephens' primary evidence to support his claim that Trump's Iran policy is working is that US sanctions are hurting Iran's economy.
But critics never claimed sanctions wouldn't hurt (because that would be dumb). We argued that they don't have a plausible strategic endpoint.

MSM craves pro-Trump stories.
They, and their critics, define fairness not as truth, but as an equal number of positive and negative stories. But no way to honestly cover Trump without making him look bad. So when something even slightly positive comes along, they jump on it.
Media’s desire for pro-Trump content is somewhat paradoxical, because most MSM workers are personally liberal. But that’s why they want it. Show fairness. Counter charges of bias.
Trying to counteract personal biases is good. Uncritically repeating spin isn’t, esp when inaccurate
When Trump lies about economic numbers, there’s no way to cover it honestly without correcting him.

When he does something dumb, like canceling North Korea sanctions via tweet that weren’t even the right sanctions, there’s no way to cover it without making him look bad.

It was a mistake for us to lionize Rod Rosenstein. He was never one of the "good guys".

Rosenstein was the one who came up with the original (and fake) justification for firing Comey and conspired with Bill Barr that Trump didn't commit criminal obstruction of justice.
His *only* good action was hiring Mueller. But Rosenstein himself was incurably conflicted from overseeing the obstruction of justice portion of the probe and that hampered the investigation from the very start.
Rosenstein had to choose between being a committed and honest public servant or a Republican... and he chose being a Republican.
