I tried yesterday to put my name to this amendment waitingfortax.com/2019/04/04/an-… to strengthen the EU(W)(No. 5) Bill. It is based on @joannaccherry's proposal (supported also by Grieve, TIGGERS and others), mentioned in my 2nd reading speech. /1
It sought to ensure that "no deal" could not happen without Parliament voting for it, and that Parliament could revoke Art 50 if neither a deal nor an extension had been agreed by the current deadline. /2
Its ultimate prospects would have depended on a change of heart by Labour, whose MPs offered only limited support when it was presented to the House of Commons. /3
But yesterday afternoon the amendment, drafted by @JolyonMaugham, was ruled "out of scope" by the @UKHouseofLords Whips' Office. Accordingly it could not be tabled. /4
