Serious thought about the 75th anniversary of D-Day. As with the 100th anniversary of Armistice, it's wrong wrong wrong to mark these occasions with military pomp. ...
By now, the time has long passed to celebrate the victory of one set of grandfathers (or great-grandfathers!) over another set. We are commemorating the advent of European peace and friendship, bought by the terrible sacrifices and sufferings of those grandfathers
November 11, 2018; June 6, 2019 - these should be commemorations of peace, reconciliation, friendship among former combatants - their shared commitment to liberal democracy.
The heroes and villains of those wars; almost all the men who carried the fight - they are buried. Their heirs should not be triumphing one over another, but joining solemnly as friends to vow never to do this to each other again.
The ultimate victory of D-Day is that it brought a better future to the descendants of those on the losing side too.
There are no more defeated. There are no more conquerers. Only mourners.
