The new National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarian's first annual report will be released publicly tomorrow, with a particular focus on "the shadowy business of military intelligence" cbc.ca/news/politics/… #cdnpoli
Also of particular interest will be the other issue they are studying: how the Government of Canada establishes national intelligence priorities. There have been very public criticisms of this process in the past two years... 2/7 #cdnpoli
One being the shuttering of the desk studying right-wing extremism/white supremacist groups before the murder of 6 Muslim men at the Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec, and to what degree has CSIS focused on this issue since 2017. 3/7 #cdnpoli
The other being the protrayal of Muslim and Sikh communities in the most recent national threat assessment report published by Public Safety. 4/7 #cdnpoli
While generally, more review is better, we at @ICLMG have expressed concern around how the committee is established (through government, and not through parliament), and the level of vetting before any report is made public. 5/7 #cdnpoli
It will be *interesting* to see how much is redacted (and whether the committee continues its novel new redaction method revealed in their special report, where it is impossible to even know how much text is being redacted). 6/7 #cdnpoli
We've been told that the strength of this committee will be its work as a bi-partisan watchdog. This first annual report - and what is shared with the public - will be an important test of whether this can be accomplished despite govt vetting and restrictions. 7/7 #cdnpoli
