Every academic needs to read this. As TT faculty, I struggle with how to support adjuncts. I am watching my friends damage their health & upend their lives trying to stay in the academy. I am wary of encouraging students to go to grad school. This job isn’t worth dying for...
I tell grad students to have a Plan B, to remember who you are beyond an academic, to be invested in something bigger than the university. But I am the exceptional story & I think they all believe they will be too. I don’t know how to convince them otherwise.
I know that the adjunctification of high ed is directly connected to capitalism & neoliberalism, that changing academia requires changing our larger cultural investments as well. Because everyone deserves healthcare. Because everyone deserves a living wage. But damn this story...
If you are an academic, or a grad student, or an administrator, you need to read this. If you are considering grad school, read this. Whatever benefits academia offers, they aren’t worth dying for.
And to be perfect honest, I know a lot of multiply marginalized, particularly queer, disabled & POC TT faculty who are damaging their health & mental wellbeing staying in the academy. I don’t have answers. I just know that things seem to be getting increasingly precarious
So many typos. So many early morning feels.
