Personal PR can add value to a freelancer's work. Now that you're an instant expert on X after publishing a story about it, how many ways can you talk about it & then get seen by other editors or producers, and maybe get more work? #Thread #PRforwriters #scicomm #amwriting #PR
Radio shows & some podcasts have producers: listen to recent eps then find their 'about us' page and send a short pitch to the person whose purview looks like a good fit for you. Here's one I booked myself onto recently, on a subject I cover for @mongabay cchange.net/2018/10/30/eri…
Say how your recent story about X is a good fit, given their previous coverage of X (demonstrating that you do your homework and are not in the business of wasting a personal finance #podcast producer's time with your pitch about squirrel intelligence). #prforwriters #scicomm #PR
Producers, like editors, are inundated with requests & suggestions, so keep it short & say right up top why this idea is relevant & other interviews you've done. Successful pitches make their job vetting you, your idea, and saying yes, easy. #PRforwriters #scicomm #amwriting #PR
Always get their name right! I once pitched the producer of a huge NPR show for years & never got a response until I spelled his name wrong: then he replied immediately to point that out. So I apologized and asked what he thought about my idea, and I never heard from him, again.
Follow up in a week or 2, adding anything that might have popped up in the news about your topic, illustrating that yours is likely of interest to their audience, or relaying how their episode yesterday indicates their listeners probably care. #PRforwriters #scicomm #amwriting
Print #PR can also be rewarding: send a link to hometown paper/alumni magazine editors when you have a great byline, noting when you lived/studied there, for 'local/alumnus succeeds' type stories. My alma mater liked my own pitch, which became a speaking gig. #scicomm #amwriting
Don't forget newspaper op-eds! Tho it's unpaid writing that you have to do on spec, they're short and once you write it up, you can pitch to multiple outlets until one says yes. Always paste the draft into the email under your short pitch: newspaper eds don't open attachments.
Here's an op-ed I wrote for the Washington Post about my coverage of a topic for @Mongabay (which I was interviewed about above), which then led to a speaking gig at a global conference on the topic. #prforwriters #scicomm #amwriting #PR washingtonpost.com/news/theworldp…
Why do unpaid work just to be on radio or a #podcast? It's rewarding, you get to talk about something you probably like, & it can also get you more gigs: book publishers & editors like to see that their prospective writers have experience being interviewed. #scicomm #amwriting
After you appear on the radio, #podcast or in print, contact the producer or editor to say 'THANK YOU' and what you appreciated about the product or the process. Producers, like editors, are people too, and love feedback. #PRforwriters #scicomm #opennotebook #amwriting
