If you believe the UK has a moral entitlement to be able to trade within the European Union just as easily as any EU country, then if Brexit leads to us losing that ability, you'll think the EU must have mistreated us in the negotiations.
Maybe I'm being unfair? Maybe it's not English exceptionalism. Maybe it's from such an ingrained belief that Brexit can't possibly have consequences that the moment those consequences became apparent in the negotiations, it simply HAD to be the EU intentionally causing trouble.
