This is a typical response by Sunni muslims, especially those belonging to Salaafi Sect. If it didn't sound too farfetched, they would have claimed Husain beheaded himself. Why do you suppose they want nothing to do with his murder?
The Caliph being the leader of the Sunni community, it's obvious that they wouldn't want the blood of Muhammad's beloved grandson on the hands of the Sunni Caliph. The story goes that Yazid asked the head of Husain to be brought back to him and poked it with a stick.
Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān had in effect abolished the Caliphate and established a hereditary monarchy, by the succession of his son Yazid, which goes against the laws practiced by muslims of electing a ruler through a council.
1st of all let me just say, I seriously don't give 2 hoots about who killed who. But let me give you the short version of what transpired between the assassination of Ali & the beheading of Husain. It's based on info from Ibn Katheer "The Short Story of Al-Husain bin 'Ali
After 4th Caliph Ali was murdered his followers immediately elected Hasan ibn Ali his elder son from Fatima to succeed him. Hasan, however, shortly afterwards signed a treaty with Muawiaya relinquishing power in favour of the latter, with a condition inter alia,..
..that one of the two who outlive the other will be the Caliph, and that the Caliph will not appoint a successor but will leave the matter of selection of the Caliph to the public.
Subsequently, Hasan was poisoned to death (some say by one of his wife on Muawiya's order, but who knows) and Muawiya enjoyed unchallenged power. Not honouring his treaty with Hasan he however nominated his son Yazid to succeed him.
Upon Muawiya's death, Yazid asked Husain the younger brother of Hasan & Muhammad's grandson, to give his allegiance to Yazid, which he refused. His caravan was cordoned by Yazid's army at Karbala and he was beheaded. Many of his relations were killed and beheaded too.
