Quick thread on @HumanEvents and our business/content strategy, because we're trying to be transparent like this

This is a for-profit business

But our approach will be *very* different from traditional media outlets

Most media sites look to monetize through one of two means

1) advertising
2) paywalls

We will use advertising - and we will have SOME exclusive content - but there are huge problems with relying on these mechanisms

Advertising is both low-value and unreliable

It's low-value because most media consumption happens on the major social media platforms

When's the last time you went to an outlet's home page, with the intent of reading their articles?

Drudge might be the only one left

Instead, the way I consume media (and I assume the way most of you do as well) is that when something looks cool on Twitter, you read it - and then you click back into Twitter when you're done

Not a ton of ad revenue there!

Next paywalls

I HATE them, generally speaking

Human Events has a political position, and we intend to use the platform to influence public debate

Paywalls are COMPLETELY contrary to that strategy, generally speaking

Hiding your content means it doesn't go viral

Also - if I'm supporting/subscribing to an outlet with a political stance

I WANT their content to go viral - because I want more people to be exposed to the material!

I don't want to make a straight purchase - money for content

I want to be a SUPPORTER

So that's what we're doing with the Founding Father membership program

We've created a discord, it's already active with almost 150 people in the channel

That's an opportunity to talk with us behind the scenes and help shape/discuss strategy

And when we create exclusive content for members, it will be behind-the-scenes material, more *clubby* than anything

It won't be the material that we want going viral

The membership will be an *experiential* product, not a simple content-for-money exchange

Anyway that's the idea
