It blows my mind that people without massive platforms write ENTIRE BOOKS without testing the market for their work first

Start with twitter/periscope

If your tweets/livestreams get traction, write an article

If that gets traction, you might be on to something
For example, I've just finished the first draft of an article on the Mueller investigation for the launch of @HumanEvents

It took a solid 6 hours of writing/revising, plus a lot of research/reading beforehand

That's a big time investment!
Tweets can be super flippant

Periscopes I can do with minimal preparation because it's an extemporaneous medium

I can A-B test material there, and when something really STICKS I can write an article on it, confident it will be worth the time to do so
And yet people will spend a year writing a book on a subject with zero "market research"
