HR 1 is a historic piece of legislation that is sparking a much needed debate about structural reforms. The Clean Elections Act is an important part of that discussion. Here are some other ideas to build on the great work in HR 1.

Start with HR 1, a historic piece of legislation that expands access to the ballot, reduces the influence of big money in our politics, and imposes stronger ethics requirements on public officials.

There are some ways to build on the fantastic reforms in HR 1: steps like DC statehood, providing publicly financed democracy dollars to the American people, and preventing U.S. subsidiaries of foreign corporations from spending $ in our elections.

Our judicial system is structured to favor the wealthy and powerful. My colleague Danielle Root and I argue that it's time for progressives to start thinking seriously about judicial structural reforms - who can bring cases and what judges hear them. americanprogress.org/issues/courts/…
That means looking at ideas to restore fair-mindedness to the judiciary and combat conservative court packing. It also means addressing barriers to accessing the courts - things like forced arbitration and limiting private rights of action.

These types of reforms are critical: as we've seen, conservatives are seeking to use the courts to make unpopular policy changes they know they can't pass legislatively. If we want progressive policies that last, we need to address extreme conservative bias in the courts.

Now it is an increasingly plausible scenario that BJP is getting absolute majority on it is own, up from 260-265 levels a month back, a thread dedicated to what went right for BJP, which faced embarrassing defeats in 3 Hindi heartland states against 'weak' Congress, months ago.
Major reasons why BJP was slipping ground:
1. Draconian SC/ST act hurt core constituency
2. Traders were angry with GST (NOT with Demonization)
3. Middle class was fed up
4. Pro Hindu voices disenchanted
5. Raga setting narrative
Only bright side was socialist schemes for Modi.
As a knee jerk reaction, the 1st thing BJP did was to get UC reservation of 10%, which despite a token, was good enough to pacify angry UC support let's who had deserted BJP and brought them back. Ofcourse some Nawabi and slave UCs continue to support Congress as ever before

1. If we sign this Treaty we will be locked into the EU and have to obey all its rules and pay all the bills it sends us for a period of at least 21 months, and probably for 45 months.
This would mean remaining in the EU for at least 5 years from the decision to leave and probably for 7 years. The EU would be able to legislate and spend against UK interests during this period, whilst we would have no vote or voice in the matter.
2. In order to “leave” in your terms at the 5 to 7 year stage the UK will need to stay in the customs union and accept all single market rules and laws, unless the EU relented over the alleged Irish border issue. 3 years on and the EU has given no ground on the made up border

The campaign finance site owned by Empower Texans did a look back at the 2018 elections on 12/18/18. The question they asked was “Who’s Really Buying Texas?”

The site (again, owned by ET) pushes this “Context matters” point, but then provide a fairly skewed context. They mashed all of the dollars spent in campaigns into one massive bucket. Then they point to themselves and say “see, we didn’t give that much”.

By rolling everything up together, they obfuscate the reality that a handful of large donor groups DOMINATE the political landscape in certain races. It’s not the everyday Texans that drive our politics.
