It seems China is using fake news to try to install Han Kuo-yu/Terry Guo as Taiwan's next president, so that KMT can sign a so-called 'peace agreement' with China akin to the Sino-British Joint Declaration for Hong Kong, so that Taiwan can be handed over to China.
The overthrow of Taiwan's government engineered by China via its puppet KMT would be one of the largest coup d'état and espionage in modern times by a foreign government, using high-tech, if it goes through. It would also be a test of the quality of Taiwan's democracy.
The debate over Hong Kong's extradition law which could threaten Taiwanese in Hong Kong, might be moot if China achieves its aim of using Han Kuo-yu/Terry Guo to take over Taiwan and KMT would become complicit traitors to the de facto independent state of Taiwan.
The world failed Tibet, Xinjiang Uygur, HK & now feels it can't speak up against China's atrocities there. The least the world needs to do now is to protect the last bastion of Taiwan from China's colonialist expansion & refuse to acknowledge China's fabricated claims over Taiwan
The world needs to #StandUpforTaiwan & support Taiwan's independence to stop imperial China. President @iingwen has done much to raise awareness internationally & new global agreements to recognize Taiwan's statehood must be developed to counter China's illegal threats.
Terry Gou asking for more international space for Taiwan by kowtowing to China and sacrificing Taiwan's independence is a backstab to Taiwan. President @iingwen's increase of Taiwan's recognition via global alliances is what truly expands Taiwan's international space.
Terry Gou's aim of using Taiwan as a pawn to so-called increase Taiwan's international space so as to expand his China's business in the US & trying to cosy up to Trump to do so, should be called out. But China is hedging its bets - is it using Guo to shore up support for Han?
Taiwanese who support Taiwan's democracy already do so but are those who care about making ends meet mutually exclusive with the KMT? If not, attempts to allay their underlying fears is needed to strengthen votes for democracy. Ignoring them means sacrificing Taiwan's democracy.
The 'One China' policy was developed when it looked like China was becoming a responsible global player but today it's used by Xi whose agenda is personal glorification. There needs to be new language and accords, and a new way of thinking to handle the China-Taiwan relationship.
Taiwan is an international issue - a legitimate question to ask is that if China took over Taiwan, will it stop there? Taiwan is no longer about the South China Sea. The fall of Taiwan will only open Xi's doors to the territorial conquest of countries under OBOR.
China's legitimation of other authoritarian regimes will shape up to be a global struggle vis-a-vis democracy and unless the world wants to sink back into feudalism, then democratic countries have to take the threat against Taiwan seriously, the bulwark against China's expansion.
The world can bypass Trump to work with US but it cannot bypass Xi in China. To pander economically to China has to come at the expense of human rights. Democratic countries have to strengthen one another's economic capacity while they still can to counter China's oppression.
The 2.7 million population in Europe/US/Canada/ANZ/East Asia (outside China) is double China's, and with a higher GDP per capita. While China used capitalism against democracy, it's time to think about how capitalism can be used to counter China's threat and protect human rights.
