Just one quick thing on the political half of Pelosi's comments on a potential Trump theft of the 2020 election. (Moving out of the main thread because I don't really need to read the comments of a zillion randos on what I'm about to say.)
Set aside whether Pelosi is right that a lurch to the center is how you beat Trump by a substantial margin. (I think she's wrong, but set it aside.) Her fears about election theft raise a bigger issue in terms of choosing the 2020 nominee.
Let's say it's the morning of Wednesday, November 4, 2020. The Democratic candidate just won a narrow but clear-to-objective-observers victory over Donald Trump. Trump is making noises about rejecting the outcome. With me?
Who do you want the Democratic candidate to be on that Wednesday morning, and what kind of a campaign do you want them to have run? What kind of candidate will be best positioned and prepared for what comes next?
That's a rhetorical question, so don't bother to answer. (Warren. Warren is the answer.)
I'm joking when I say the only acceptable answer is Warren, and I don't want to get into a huge debate about it—in fact, I'm gonna go hang out with my kids for a bit so I don't get sucked too deep into this. But it's a question worth pondering.
And it seems to me that Pelosi's comments, as reported by the Times, don't grapple with this aspect of things at all, and it seems to me that that's a problem too.
