@MoveTheSticks made a great point recently ab explaining why teams make picks, etc from film (instead of citing BS). That means seeing #Giants Jones' traits through the lens of DG/Shurmur. Throwing on the run, placement, poise, and shot plays rank top of the list #GiantsPride
Throwing on Run
Jones is comfortable throwing on the run in BOTH directions, w/details like getting depth in his roll so he can then come downhill to the target. Cutcliffe did not move Jones much, but just bc he wasn't asked to do so often does not mean he can't #GiantsPride
Throwing on the Run (2)
Jones’ mobility was mostly seen out of structure, as he flashes athleticism, awareness and the arm to make NFL throws like this. When I first viewed this in March, wrote “Shurmur guy” in my notes #GiantsPride
Mobility on Screens
Athleticism extends into the screen game unlocking plays for OC’s. On this screen fake as he is able to turn around to find a throwing lane through Austin Bryant’s rush. The Duke offense may frustrate fans, but traits are present nevertheless #GiantsPride
Placement
Jones’ placement on screens is excellent and solid elsewhere, allowing the most opportunity for run after catch. This may sound sleepy, but throwing a Runner’s Ball unlocks offenses geared to get playmakers into space, like Crossers w/Bubble Action #GiantsPride
Placement (2)
Was asked this year why more slants were not taken to the house by Big Blue? Placement was certainly 1 of the reasons, Jones here beats off coverage w/inside leverage throwing a perfectly placed Runner’s Ball #GiantsPride
Poise
Jones is no stranger to contact in the pocket, able to show good peripheral vision to the pass rush and either escape or hang in to send it downfield. This might be his most overlooked trait and biggest difference to incumbent Eli Manning #GiantsPride
Shot Plays
Jones possesses good touch on deep balls, understands coverage VERY well pre-snap. Both plays throwing deep posts vs Quarters, his WR’s just cant pull them in. Scouting is not always just looking at highlights, and these are very good misses #GiantsPride
Phase 2 of this thread will look at things Jones must improve on to secure his floor at the next level. Phase 3 will look at possible play calls to match Jones fit #GiantsPride
Drift
On throws to his left, Jones has a tendency to move in that direction and add in extra hitches. This derails the timing of plays, and deconstructs the pocket making it difficult on these 2 throws: 1 a pick and 1 an incomplete #GiantsPride
Drift (2)
Most debilitating on throws that require anticipation to the far left field. Many have highlighted this play, as it clearly affects his play speed delivering this Out very late. NFL hashes will reduce the severity of angle, but the issue must be addressed #GiantsPride
Decision Making
Jones is very good in the pre-snap phase of QB’ing, but can struggle post-snap if the defense does something “unexpected”. Falls under field vision, ability to isolate/eliminate in the progression, and ultimately play speed #GiantsPride
Phase 2:
The Drift must be fixed to efficiently distribute the ball from the pocket, there is no way around it. The Decision Making must evolve, or be aided by as many 1-read throws as possible. Phase 3 will look at play-call mix to max strengths/minimize weaknesses #GiantsPride
