PM Modi’s mention of #RajivGandhi and corruption in one sentence seems to have ruffled quite a few feathers in Congress ecosystem. The direct attack on first family’s halo has struck raw nerves. Let’s focus on three disasters of Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure. 1/n
Not many of us know that Indian Army had around 4000 casualties from 1987-1990, fighting a war in Sri Lanka which was never ours to fight. Yes, he paid for this with his life, but so did thousands of Indian soldiers on the whims of one man. 2/n
Contrast this with media’s treatment of Modi on Abhinandan. Entire propaganda machine was geared up to hound and blame Modi for an incident, which happened while defending the country from foreign aggression. 3/n
Another albatross around his legacy is Bhopal Gas tragedy. Ecosystem media loves to bash Modi for absconders like Malya and Nirav Modi, who are facing the wrath of law right now. But, they conveniently forget the curious case of Warren Anderson. 4/n
Anderson was put under house arrest 4 days after the incident. But instead of facing trial, he posted bail after just a few hours and escorted out of the country. The slain lives of tens of thousands of poor people reduced to mockery by one man. 5/n
Supreme Court of India gave a landmark judgment in 1985, giving right of maintenance to an aggrieved Muslim divorced woman. But this was easily overturned by Rajiv using his huge mandate in the parliament and a great opportunity of social reform was lost. 6/n
When Rajiv Gandhi won with a landslide in 1984 as a young leader with no political baggage, destiny gave him a chance to change India’s fortunes. That he did, but only for the worse. Thanks for reading. n/n
