It is customary for Boise State to confer an honorary doctoral degree upon a deserving individual each spring during this ceremony. Today, we are proud to honor @HamdiUlukaya, founder and CEO of @Chobani.
#BoiseStateGrad
"@HamdiUlukaya has demonstrated a lifelong dedication to serving and providing opportunities for thousands to flourish under his leadership. I am pleased to bestow upon him an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters for contributions to human welfare from Boise State" - Dr. Schimpf
"I can’t believe I’m here. A guy who grew up in the mountains with shepherds… and comes to this country. And makes yogurt. And is invited to speak at this state’s biggest graduation ceremony?
I mean: Are you serious? Nobody is going to believe this." - @hamdiulukaya
#BoiseState
"Conventional wisdom is constant. It is oppressive. It is paralyzing. In my experience, it is almost always, totally and completely, 100 percent … WRONG. And it always has been." - @hamdiulukaya

"It’s like what my favorite poet, Rumi, who grew up where I grew up, once wrote. He said: “Conventional opinion is the ruin of souls.”
Guess when he wrote that? SEVEN HUNDRED YEARS AGO!" - @hamdiulukaya

"Forget what conventional wisdom says. Trust your gut. Find the place where you belong.
After all, you are graduating from a school so willing to follow its own path… that it had the courage to ask: Who says that grass has to be GREEN?" - @hamdiulukaya
#BoiseStateGrad
"No matter where you go, the @Chobani journey has taught me something special: what matters most, in business and in life, is the difference you make for other people, for your community, for your country, and for the world." - @hamdiulukaya

"You're about to walk up here and get your diploma. As you walk off the stage, you might feel a little worried. A little hesitant. A little fear about the future. That the world is so big, and you are so small.
Nothing could be further from the truth." - @hamdiulukaya
#BoiseState man at podium
"The truth is - you couldn’t be more ready.
As Rumi wrote: “It’s time to unfold your own myth."
Just like that river that Bert Perrine found.
Just like that magic that created Magic Valley.
That power is now part of you.
I can't wait to see what you do with it." - @hamdiulukaya man clasping hands at podium
"Thank you to the faculty, for encouraging us to pursue our dreams, and equipping us with the necessary knowledge and skills to accomplish what we are setting out to do." - Madeline Fluharty, commencement student speaker

"Graduates of 2019, think about what it is that you’re afraid of? A general rule I’ve tried to set for myself is this, that thing that I’m most afraid of doing, yeah, I should probably do that. That’s the reason I’m standing in front of you today." - Madeline Fluharty

"So, graduates of 2019, in these coming months and years what is it we are going to let define our lives – Crippling Fear, or bold love? Thank you, and congratulations Boise State graduates." - Madeline Fluharty, commencement student speaker

Each spring during commencement, an honorary doctorate is awarded to recognize an individual of outstanding accomplishment in scholarship, creativity, public service, education, and human welfare.

This afternoon’s Honorary Doctorate nominee is especially deserving: the Honorable Judge Sergio Gutierrez, Idaho’s first Latino judge, served southwest Idaho from the bench for 25 years.

#BoiseStateGrad
Judge Gutierrez immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico as a young child and went to work in the farm fields when he was 8. He retired from the Idaho Court of Appeals in December 2018, and frequently volunteers his time to promote various diversity, education, and leadership causes.
"I am humbled being recognized for my public and community service. I am very grateful for Dr. @AliciaGarza_ having nominated me. It is especially meaningful to me because my life's journey of public and community service began while attending BSU in 1976." - Judge Gutierrez
"I firmly believe the American Dream is still very much alive. In some respects, the story of my life mirrors the narrative arc of the typical American Dream. From nothing, to something. From migrant farmworker, to respected judge." - Judge Gutierrez
#BoiseStateGrad man at podium
"My story is that of an immigrant, brought to this country by parents who wanted the best for their children, but lacked the resources to do other than create - by moving to this country - the opportunity for us to succeed or fail on our own." - Judge Gutierrez

"I realize that common themes of whatever successes I have had are also the components of my American Dream: education, sacrifice, hard work. When I imagine what may come, I envision, as in the words of Tom Brokaw, “the greatest generation” yet. That, my friends, includes you." man at podium
