Starting off my weekend fun with a nice little story: I've been visiting GWU's hospital every day over the past week to attend to a friend in the ICU there. Outside in front, near the Metro, is a group of older men who play chess. And well, I love chess, so... (thread)
A few days ago, on my way back to work over my lunch hour, I stopped to watch a game. When they finished, one of the older gentleman gestured toward me and said, "You want next?"

"Sure!"

And so, I played a game and got my ass kicked. BUT...
What I really loved is that these gentlemen are friends and were immediately affirming. I introduced myself, and without being asked, they used she/her pronouns. When I came today to play, one said: "She's back!" and to his friend: "Hey, this lady's good. You should play her."
It was really lovely to be in the company of a group of older men who were effortlessly welcoming. These kind of interactions are healing. There was no extra effort. Just treating folks with respect. And with that, I'm going to a party. Have a good weekend, y'all!
