/Going to do a quick thread on the main point @ThePlumLineGS makes in here 👇The bottom line - however trade was viewed by Democrats in the past, current D voters are very pro-free trade and very much against the President's tariffs. It suggests a real opening for 2020 Ds.
/His piece builds on this terrific analysis from @crampell this morning. washingtonpost.com/opinions/democ…
/Here's our version of Greg and Catherine's argument abt trade being something for Dsto lean into. It begins w/data reminding us Trump was trounced in MI/PA/WI in 2018, has lost 15-20 pts in IA/MI/PA/WI since Jan 2018. America First not working there.
/Will share now graphs from recent polls on US/Dems attitude towards trade, First set are from @pewresearch. Current Dem voters overwhelmingly support free trade.
/Current Dem voters overwhelmingly oppose Trump's tariffs.
/Most Dem voters think NAFTA is good.
/A poll just released by @thehill finds only a third of Americans thinks Trump's trade approach towards China will improve the US economy. thehill.com/hilltv/what-am…
/A recent poll by the @ChicagoCouncil has similar findings as the Pew survey does. Americans overwhelmingly think trade is a good thing.
/Current Dem voters overwhelmingly believe @NAFTA is a good thing.
/A new poll in WI has Dem voters there saying free trade is a good thing by a 66/19 margin, very similar margins as Pew found nationally.
/We've studied polling on trade and tariffs in recent years and the data in this thread is similar to many polls we've seen, state and national. Trump's America First policies aren't working, are unpopular. D voters are like trade, oppose tariffs. Opening here for 2020 Dems.
