1/Mini-thread. In a new analysis 👇I argue that Trump has entered a level of unpopularity which very few incumbents have ever successfully returned from. His chances of winning next year through conventional means are evaporating.
2/I raise this because the last 2 GOP Presidents came to the WH through extraordinary means. Bush was appointed by SCOTUS, and did not win the election outright; Trump would not won without a massive intervention by the Russian govt and a late trumped up FBI nothing burger.
3/Trump's wildness/extreme behavior of last few months - Iran, Barr burying of Mueller, disregard of legitimacy of the House, elevated levels of tweeting/disinfo now new Barr grand inquisitor status - is sign of his deep desperation, his understanding now of how f-ed he his.
4/What Trump is telling us now is that he's willing to do anything to preserve himself, get re-elected. ANYTHING. Conspire w/hostile foreign powers. Knowingly spread disinfo. Break our democracy. THERE ARE NO LIMITS TO WHAT HE'S ABOUT TO DO. He has in effect become a tyrant.
5/I've believed for some time that impeachment was inevitable, but also admire Pelosi's very public restraint. It is an extreme measure and should be treated that way. But we are there now, and the central indictment must be Trump's unwillingness to adhere to dem norms/laws.
6/Trump's refusal to accept the limits inherent in being a President, to seek absolute unchecked power, is the greatest crime one can commit in a democracy. In our nation, the wellspring of global democracy, it is a particularly grave betrayal, one w/o precedent in our history.
7/Democrats must accept where we are now, and dramatically escalate the terms of engagement. When formal impeachment hearings begin aren't the issue - it is whether contempt equals prison, criminal referrals to FBI start flying, subpoenas escalate. House must assert itself now.
8/No one was elected to Congress to deal w/rump's epic venality. But we are here now, wishing it weren't so, or somehow it is all going to be okay, that Mueller or the Courts will fix it, just isn't reasonable thinking any more. Time for patriots to rise, and reject this tyrant.
