Since humans began to directly measure carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, we've set a new record high nearly every May.
The industrial revolution has caused a massive amount of carbon dioxide to be added to the atmosphere.

Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere have increased more in the last 15 years than they did in over 9000 years prior to the introduction of fossil fuels.
In 1992, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change set out the goal to "stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere ... [and] prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system".

And yet, we are now only ~5 ppm below the 1992 projections.
