THREAD. 1/ The Brexit crisis enters a new stage today as a) Labour (at f***ing last!) pull out of the talks and b) Tory leadership race begins. Here's what it means and what the left can do...
/ The only way the talks could have produced a deal was if Labour were prepared to act as a "virtual Coalition" with the Tories. No leadership could survive that. Hence talks about to end and May reverts to getting deal thru with Tory right/DUP votes.
/ May can get deal thru if enough Labour MPs defy the whip, party policy and the membership and if unelected party officials encourage them to do so. That's what we need to stop (see below for how)...
/ There is zero chance of a liberal Tory becoming PM over the summer. It will be yet another closet racist neo-colonial fantasist. They will have 3 months without parliamentary scrutiny and may try to renegotiate the Brexit deal in the direction of an FTA...
/ The aim of every progressive person has to be to topple this Tory/DUP government - it's electoral base has deserted it to Farage, it has zero legitimacy and will be a wholly different entity to the "strong and stable" May administration...
/ Labour has to assemble an electoral coalition of people who want an open, global, European-oriented economy and society - the right may be split now, but a hard-Brexit Tory leader could heal that split. Either way we prepare for a snap election in October/November...
/ What happens on 23 May is secondary but important. labour has a few days to capitalise on its break with the talks by spelling out clearly the demand for a 2nd referendum. The only way Lexiteers get their Brexit now is thru a Boris Johnson govt...
/ From now to 23 May Labour's message has to be Remain/Reform and a second referendum to break the deadlock. No capitulation to the CBI's pressure for a deal at any price. More here... newstatesman.com/politics/stagg…
/ The super-rich know they are one accident away from a radical governent in Britain that will end neoliberalism and puncture the Trump/Saudi war drive in the Gulf. The smears and slanders against a labour will intensify...
/ Any Labour MP who votes for May's deal should lose the whip and selections begin immediately to replace them. By making that possibility real and clear is how we defeat May, and open the way to a radical Labour government by Christmas. ENDS
