I'm doing a bunch of reading about emotionally unavailable parents, and a bunch of it really resonates, but a bunch of it also doesn't quite. There's a complexifier in my history that was true for several of my friends too – we had music/theatre/sports etc, & we had the internet
taking a bunch of videos of your kids as really young children is probably a pretty interesting and potentially useful gift you can give them later on in life

my sense is that attachment theory is very fixated on very early childhood – (and I can't argue with how true or untrue that is bc I wasn't really super conscious of what my really-early-childhood was like)

I feel like it underweights the 7-thru-17 years, which IMO are important

Thinking again about how writers did Kilmonger wrong, and then Danaerys wrong in roughly the same way. The revolutionaries are framed as irredeemably violent, bloodthirsty, out of control, and this ends up justifying the status quo with some minor kinda-cosmetic adjustments
My tentative suspicion is that Kilmonger and Dany had to be *shoehorned* into villainy because the production machine assumes that mainstream western audiences can’t handle the idea of radical, revolutionary change. It’s edgy “enough” to just consider it and then mourn what-if
Previous thread thinking about this. In 2019 we still mostly have cartoon villains. I think the reason Winter Soldier is my favourite MCU movie is that it came the closest to escaping this gravitational pull of status-quo storytelling

Wondering now about the “shitty conference call” class of problem that folks like Genghis Khan might’ve had to deal with. Anybody read anything funny/interesting about olden annoyances?
I imagine it must’ve been frustrating to send out messengers and couriers who literally just disappear and there’s no way of tracking them. Iirc some of the best early emperors/conquerors were basically masters of postal routing and logistics

They make for charming short term daters and upsetting long term partners.
Hiding fear of intimacy behind smiles, humor and sarcasm.

The avoidant is created in childhood. Something happened that made them associate connection with pain.

Mostly it's physically available but emotionally unavailable parents.

1. There was an excellent article by The Washington Free Beacon the other day that discussed the politicization of the US intel community in favor of the Democrat Party.
2. The list of IC failures is a long one, but their apparent meddling in the 2016 election, including the illegal domestic surveillance at the direction of the Obama White House, puts their actions in support of the Democrat Party beyond the pale.
3. A retired senior member of the IC was triggered BIGLY by this article. His comments follow after some excerpts from the article that are presented for context purposes.

#History/#Art thread – From my recent trip to Madurai/Tirunelveli. On Jain sites (some with a rich history dating back to at least the 3rd cent. BCE), early Pandyan rock-cut cave temples (7th-8th cent. CE) & the amazing Vettuvan koil.

Before I start on the places, the history around all this is fascinating & splits opinion. Is it apt to call the script Tamili/Tamil Brahmi? Did it develop independently in the Tamil country/come with the Jain monks from the north? Were 8,000 Jains actually impaled in Madurai?>

THREAD: there is no one way to be a writer, no one way to tell a story, no one way to do this thing we do as a hobby or as a job or as an art form. Some write a little every day, in an office; some write a lot at one time at varying, sporadic points. It's all okay.
I think it's important to challenge all pieces of "Known Writing Advice," all those chestnuts of Vital Lore, and to see what they are and what works for you. We all have our own weird fingerprints to imprint upon this thing we do.
I think it IS important to talk about the things you do and the processes you use to write and tell a story and to hold them up and examine them -- share them with others, and listen to their ways of doing things, too.
