Nigeria has launched a new national youth policy, ten years after its last national youth policy was launched office.youthhubafrica.org/nigerian-natio…
There are quite a lot of interesting things we have seen in the new national youth policy, the most interesting will be the youth age definition from 18 - 35 years in the previous policy to 15 - 29 years in the new policy #youth #Policy #YouthPolicyNaija
However, there are lots of other interesting things. The policy in itself is very ambitious for the next five years in terms of why it hopes to achieve, one of such is bursaries to 100k eligible STEM undergrads in 5 years #YouthPolicyNaija
As well as the creation of an average of 3.7 million jobs per year and 18.5 million jobs over the 5 year policy period. #YouthPolicyNaija
The Policy has five strategic thrusts covering 1. Productive workforce, 2. Healthy lifestyle, 3. Participation and inclusiveness, 4. Protective environment for youth development and 5. Partnerships and collaboration #YouthPolicyNaija
There are a number of weaknesses we have identified in the new policy. The policy although identifies collaboration as one of five strategic thrusts, still remains govt heavy. There is a lot of Government should set up this and that, #YouthPolicyNaija
An example of this Government heavy policy will be in the objective on ICTs where the policy fails to identify partnerships with existing private sector led initiatives in the sector to support them to scale up as against setting up new initiatives #YouthPolicyNaija
The policy recommends the establishment of 500k mass literacy centres for out of school youth over the next 5 years, this in my opinion is not well informed, there are cheaper, tested and more scalable options to reach out of school youth #YouthPolicyNaija
In all, it's a big improvement that a new national youth policy has been developed, albeit at the tail end of the administration, we hope that in its second term, the Federal Government will put strategies in place for its speedy implementation #YouthPolicyNaija
Finally, while a new national youth policy has been launched, it will be interesting to know if an evaluation of the implementation of the previous youth policy was made, we will follow up with the ministry of youth to inquire on this #YouthPolicyNaija
We will also continue to review the new youth policy as well as make an analysis of its content in the coming days
