As a Kannadiga who is proud of my mother tongue, its beauty, history & contribution to Bharat's rich culture, I feel a few aspects of the National Education Policy 2019 Draft have been twisted, misinterpreted & misunderstood to say govt is trying to impose Hindi. (1/n)
The 3-language formula, as is stated in the draft NEP, has been in place since 1968 and has been endorsed in 1986 and 1992 updates of the NEP as well.
The current draft of the NEP merely says that this 3-language formula can be continued in schools. (2/n)
The current draft of the NEP merely says that this 3-language formula can be continued in schools. The NEP doesn't impose, rather encourages, learning Hindi as a language in school. (3/n)
When it's encouraging a child in a non-hindi state to learn Hindi, it also directs the kid in a hindi-speaking state to learn a language spoken elsewhere in India like Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali etc. The purposes are national integration & preservation of all langs. (4/n)
NEP promotes learning an extra language as an elective from Class 6. Here, Hindi could be dropped from 3-lang formula & one could learn 2 regional languages & English. This policy is only a draft & open for opinion & edits. This can be 1 of the amendments I could take up. (5/n)
Another article within the same chapter clearly indicates that the policy doesn't set out to impose hindi on anyone. P4.5.1 of the policy deals with the medium of instruction, where it promotes the use of the local language as the medium of instruction until Class 5. (6/n)
This was drafted keeping in mind that a child will be most comfortable to study in the language that he's accustomed to at home. This, in no way, amounts to Hindi Imposition. It rather encourages the use of the local language over English and Hindi in schools. (7/n)
After all, students can easily grasp a number of languages when they are studying in Class 1 to Class 6. As an extension of this 3-language formula, I feel that children must learn five languages - the mother tongue, Sanskrit, Hindi, English & another regional language (s). (8/n)
This will ensure students have a clear understanding & command over all the langs. They'll actually understand the integrated framework of all our langs, which further promotes the appreciation of our cultural unity. I specify Sanskrit as it's the mother of all Indian langs (9/n)
It's quite unfortunate that certain leaders have quoted selective sections of the draft policy and twisted it to suit their political agenda. They have either misunderstood the objective of the policy or have deliberately twisted the narrative so as to stay relevant. (10/n)
While understanding advantages of knowing other languages spoken in India, it's upto us to cooperate & work with each other for the sake of the development of Bharat. We should, in fact, celebrate our diversity & uniqueness, not divide ourselves on the basis of lang/region (11/n)
It's sad that a few people with vested interests have created a 'Hindi Imposition' sentiment despite these facts being in the public domain. (12/n)
These 'Breaking India' forces are afraid that if this policy sees the light of the day, their hideous agenda of disintegrating Bharat by peddling false narratives will fall flat. I hope every1 understands their hidden narrative & doesn't let these 'Break India' forces win. (13/n)
