Is the NHS safe from UK trade deals? Where to start with this one? US healthcare companies are already present in the UK (see e.g. theguardian.com/society/2016/f…) and the degree of private involvement in the NHS will always be a UK decision. But...
Right now we cannot say the NHS will not be affected by trade deals e.g. given US demands on drug pricing (huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/trump-pl…), just as we can't say for certain that food standards will not be changed (use of the word lowering is not useful in this context), so...
Rather than @LiamFox getting irate when people say bad things may happen in a trade deal, it would be better for the UK to be developing trade policy much more transparently - not least as the devil will be in the detail - as I have frequently said... ecipe.org/blog/assessing…
The fundamental category error this Government has made is to assume that trade deals, as they generate growth, are popular. It never was the case, even less so today. Especially with the US and this President. You have to argue for them not get irate /end theguardian.com/business/2015/…

It is pretty obvious decisions by the likes of Ford and Honda have a Brexit dimension, but that Brexit isn't the whole story. However the threat of tariffs and other barriers from no-deal wiping out profit margins is likely to focus minds.
There's a less visible story, and that is the UK's success in the car sector has been build over 30+ years. I see no evidence that we are building or even thinking about anything even remotely on the same scale - from any political party.
As we know from the 1980s the loss of major employers hits communities hard. Hi-tech clusters in London and university dominated areas aren't replacements, both need to be part of our story.

Another backstop / EU negotiation thread. Could the EU rethink? Not on the substative need for a backstop. But a UK Government with realistic asks like timetables on the future relationship, if backed up by a likely Parliamentary majority, could spark dialogue.
Engaging in realistic asks and awareness that it is a Parliamentary majority, not stupid no deal threats, that provides negotiating leverage, is precisely what the current Government has not done. So far no leadership candidate seems to recognise this either. We can but hope...

Second: The actual experts do not agree with you, and your fear-mongering is likely causing more harm than good.

I’ve recently had to use my adopted country’s private healthcare system, and it is *not* like the NHS back home. It’s so weird I feel like it needs a thread. So...

Public vs Private healthcare: The small but surprisingly important differences that nobody ever seems to mention.
1/ First things first: the big differences, like having to actually get money out to pay for healthcare, and wrangling with your insurance company, etc etc, get talked about on every #MedicareForAll post. This thread is not for that. It was the little things that surprised me.
2/ It starts off in a pretty similar way. Call the hospital, make an appointment, go to the hospital. Enter through the main foyer (past the guy on the grand piano, which I grant you is a bit weird) get in the lift and go find your specialist clinic. Just like home.

The first thing to say is that @duncanrobinson & @econcallum are to be congratulated on a serious piece of analysis, which avoids the parade of dismal, lazy clichés that we see in so many other publications. Serious political journalism shouldn't be so rare, but it's good to see!
There's a useful analytic frame in dividing Labour's political economy thinking into fiscal policy, monetary policy, and structural reforms. And it's right to say that the third of these will actually be the most significant.

2. Firstly it’s naive. Medicine is harmful. Do no harm does not mean do nothing. Drugs = side effects, blood tests=needles, surgery=trauma.
3/ Good medicine always ensures benefits outweighs the risks. But there will always be risks.
