144,258 apprehensions plus inadmissibles, up 32 percent from April
More than 100k were families or children
680k processed during first 8 months of FY19
There it is
132,887 Border Patrol apprehensions in May

Of those:

84,542 family unit members
11,507 unaccompanied children
36,838 single adults

On the way home to DC, we met a large group of Central Americans in the El Paso airport that had just been released. The adults wore GPS ankle bracelets and many said they'd never been on a plane before. Some had tickets in Economy Plus, the only last-minute seats available
You can imagine the confusion when they landed at O'Hare in Chicago and had to find the gates for their connecting flights to Newark, Dulles, etc. For weeks they had been following orders from coyotes, then CBP agents. Suddenly they were on their own & looked completely lost.
A father from Honduras who sat next to me said he and his 14-year-old son were on their way to Harrisonburg, VA. They had crossed into El Paso and were released and on a plane less than 48 hours later. CBP is moving people through as fast as possible; there's no room to hold them

Finally have a chance to respond to your thoughtful thread @jdelreal. I realize it's a troubling story and you're concerned about how it could be used for "talking points." I have deep respect for your work but I'm troubled by the implications of that.
This is a complicated, emotional and intensely politicized story. It needs honest open-eyed reporting. Sensitive, humane, yes. But honest. That's our job. So we went to rural Guatemala to report this story and find out why so many children are leaving.
Have you done that, recently? Have you, @itscaitlinhd? Because if you are only talking to migrants who have arrived in the U.S., or families you contact through advocates, then you do not get a full understanding of the forces driving this thing.
