According to Essence Mag: In April, former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, whose reign had lasted 30 years, was removed from office in a military coup following uprisings against his government. The International Criminal Court accused Bashir of crimes against humanity.
The Financial Times reported the two parties, Transitional Military Council (TMC) & Alliance For Freedom and Change reached an agreement that included a three-year transition to a fully civilian administration. The deal raised hopes that the democratic revolution could succeed.
Lt. Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan, head of the TMC announced the suspension of negotiations for 72 hours, saying the revolution derailed from its peaceful path following escalation on the ground. The talks dissolved and civilians started a 2 day strike.
According to Elle it seems there was a response to the strike, paramilitary and security forces raided unarmed demonstrators at the capital of Sudan who were peacefully protesting.
According to the Federal Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization, 52 people are dead and 784 injured, though the report says that the number of injured people could be higher.
Allegedly, The military also created an internet blackout by cutting off mobile data, which NPR reports most Sudanese people use to access the internet, leaving many without the ability to communicate or disseminate information.
According to Elle civilian reports have put the death count at over 100 and have said a number of bodies were dumped into the Nile river. According to the Times, civilians reported that soldiers had raped women and looted stores, while other burned tents and beat protesters.
Allegedly, The group that instigated violence is called the Rapid Support Forces, led Lt. Gen. Mohamed Hamdan, known as Hemeti. They have ties to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, that funneled billions of dollars to the military forces that have assumed power in Sudan.
Sudanese Professionals Association, wants civilian rule and a long period of transition before new elections. Since negotiations fell apart, the military has said they will hold elections within nine months. At this time, violence continues to escalate in Sudan.
As protesters in Sudan continue to die in the name of democracy and for civilian rule. Here is what YOU can do.
1. Educate yourself on what’s going on 2. Spread Awareness (It’s important for people to document crimes against humanity so they are not forgotten in history books
3. At this point, donating money will not solve this problem. Use your voice/social media to encourage the U.S. Government to sanction a list of Sudanese regime officials and their accomplices who are responsible for ongoing violence and state looting. Read more @politico
4. TALK to your city officials, senators, governor, encourage them to speak out against this. Don’t be on the side of history that ignored this. Even without a solid answer to this crisis, silence will never be the answer. #DontJustPrayForSudan #NeverForgetSudan
