Happy Father's Day to Saint Joseph, rightful heir to the throne of David, who lived the majority of his life under Roman occupation and died an unknown carpenter before Jesus began his public ministry, but who has now taken the place of a god in the Pantheon in Rome.
Matthew begins his gospel by showing that Joseph is the rightful heir, yet he’s traveling with Mary to Bethlehem to register for a census at the decree of his pagan occupier. I get images of David hiding from Saul, or even Aragorn shepherding Frodo.
No one knows when Joseph died, but in my head-canon it was *immediately* before Jesus began his public ministry. The crown passed to him, with Mary as Queen Regent. He then goes to find John the Baptist, the last High Priest, to anoint him as King of the Jews.
It's clear from the Bible that Caiaphas was a phony (he tore his garments and didn't die) and John the Baptist was the last High Priest, who in baptizing Jesus both made him a "priest in the order of Melchizedek," That is, both the High Priest and the King of Israel.
If Caiaphas was legit it's pretty weird that no angel told him about Jesus. Instead, Mary went to Zechariah and Elizabeth and their miraculous child John in the Visitation, which is clearly written to model the Ark of the Covenant returning to Israel.
