One thing I wanted to note, if you see someone getting harassed on Twitter, esp when it's because some big account sent their followers to harass them, there are some things you can do to help. They are minor but maybe we can figure out more.
One thing is that you can report the accounts that are harassing the person. I know, it feels ridiculously like being a narc, but whatever.
If you want to reply to a harasser (more on this in a minute), then take the target out of the thread. They don't need more mentions.
Or, even better, I should have said this first, you can ask "How can I help?"
You can tweet to the person being harassed that you support them and they don't deserve what's happening. You would be surprised how much that means!! Seriously!
I personally do not believe in engaging with mean people online. I think it just encourages them and exhausts you and that is why there is a block button and a mute button.
I have in fact (let's make this a thread about ME) broken this rule of late, after years of adhering to it, and it was AWFUL. Why did I make sarcastic remarks to some TERF last night? It did my soul no good and deffo didn't change her mind about shit. So I'm back to it.
These are all such small actions, especially in the face of the abuse and harassment people experience. I would love to hear from smarter people and more people who have been on the receiving end on ways people can help, collectively or individually.
Oh another thing I’ve learned—I think it’s better to mute people in the moment and block them later because harassers like to go back to their hive and be like “I was blocked!”
