New study shows Medicaid work requirements in Arkansas caused 18,000 people to lose health coverage because of red tape, with no gain in employment. Just as everyone who understands this issue predicted. Nice job, GOP:

And we should note, THAT WAS EXACTLY THE INTENT. It was never about getting people into jobs, which they supposedly felt they didn't need to get since they had that sweet health coverage. Kicking as many as possible off coverage was the real goal./2
As I've argued before, Republicans say they hate government bureaucracy, but when they want to screw over some poor people, they're expert at weaponizing bureaucracy./end

1. I went to grad school at Penn so I have only good things to say about the school, but it's always struck me as bizarre that Trump presents his admission there as though it was an honor given to perhaps one genius student in a generation.
2. "The hardest school to get into, the best school in the world," he calls it. It's a fine school, but not quite that.
3. He has lied about it forever, claiming he was 1st in his class when he was actually a middling student. Here's an interesting article showing just what you'd expect:

1. Family connections got him in
2. At the time it wasn't that hard to get in anyway

To bring you up to date, there are two dozen women who have accused the president of various forms of sexual misconduct.

His position, supported by pretty much every Republican, is that they're all lying.
The president has been accused of:
- Bursting into dressing rooms to watch teen girls undress.
- Kissing women against their will.
- Grabbing women's breasts.
- Grabbing women's buttocks.
- Grabbing women's genitals.
- Rape.
Imagine believing, "Two dozen different women decided to accuse him of the thing he's on tape bragging he can do with impunity, but they're all liars because he'd never do anything like that thing he bragged he could do."

That's what being a Republican now requires.

For those who are not Gen X males and may be wondering about John Cusack's appeal, allow me to explain. It isn't because he's a good actor; there are plenty of good actors. It's because of the character he always played back in the day...
Cusack always played a guy who to outward appearances, and in the opinion of the popular kids, was a dork, but in fact was actually COMPLETELY AWESOMELY COOL. The events of the film would reveal this unacknowledged coolness, and he might even get the girl...
To a certain kind of boy - like, say, the kind who would grow up to be a writer - this was a character with whom they would powerfully identify. That's why Gen X guys love John Cusack. /end

I have spoken at length about work requirements, and this is why.

What is happening in Arkansas is infuriating.

There's a lot to unpack here, and I know threads can be tedious, but please stay with me. 1/
I live in rural PA, where progressives can be pretty moderate. Last spring, a member of our local progressive group's Facebook page commented, "What's the big deal? If they're able bodied, shouldn't they work?" The comment got "likes," so I asked to speak at the next meeting. 2/
I explained to the group that the goal of #workrequirements was not to get people to work, but to kick ppl off #Medicaid. I stressed that the bureaucracy surrounding work requirements targets those who work. After the meeting, so many said, "I hadn't thought of it that way." 3/

Most people covered by Medicaid in Arkansas already work. Those who don’t are either children, have a disability or are taking care of family members. splcenter.org/news/2018/08/1…
Take Cesar Ardon. He had a tumor removed last year, is self-employed with unpredictable hours. He uses Medicaid to cover the cost of care for the tumor removal & other health problems — but almost lost it because he doesn’t always get 20 hrs/wk. He’s a plaintiff in the suit.

Michigan is shamelessly attempting to design Medicaid work requirements to disproportionately burden Black beneficiaries. Whether or not this policy is ultimately implemented, please know that it points to larger patterns in the experiences of Black Medicaid beneficiaries.
A Black woman I interviewed in Michigan 5 yrs ago: “if you’re white & you have Medicaid…you are looked upon with more sympathy...it's ‘she’s going through a hard time right now'…If it’s us…then we’re looking for a hand out…& we are treated as such”
Black #Medicaid beneficiaries know exactly what the deal is b/c their experiences inform them. Policies like we are seeing in MI right now fit into a larger set of processes that ultimately undermine equality & democratic citizenship, especially 4 Black folk #FragmentedDemocracy
