Every large metro is getting older -- and every large metro (except one -- see below!) is getting less white.

A thread with highlights from today's annual Census data release on local demographics.

(1/many)

census.gov/newsroom/press…
San Jose is the most diverse large metro in the country. Outside the West, Houston and Washington DC are the most diverse.
The least diverse metros in the country include three in Pennsylvania and two Texas border metros. Eight of these are predominantly non-Hispanic White, and two are mostly Hispanic.
The two most racially/ethnically diverse counties in the US are the borough of Queens and the island of Kauai.
Number of the 104 largest metros where the largest group is:

White: 88
Hispanic: 12
Black or African-American: 2 (Memphis and Jackson MS)
Asian: 2 (San Jose and Honolulu)
Diversity has increased most in Orlando. Several metros in Pennsylvania and New England -- Scranton, Allentown, Boston, New Haven, Springfield -- have gotten notably more diverse this decade.
The only large metro -- out of 104 -- that's whiter today than 2010? Charleston SC.
Diversity has increased most since 2010 in outer suburbs of large metros. But urban counties remain the most diverse, and non-metro counties the least.
All of the 104 largest metros in the US have aged this decade. Median age rose the most on the west coast of Florida. Some younger tech centers -- Boise, Austin, Durham -- are also among the most rapidly aging.
Where are young people going? The young adult (25-34) population rose most in mid-size metros in Florida and Mountain states.
Young adults -- just like everyone else -- are getting more suburban. The 25-34 population grew fastest in the lower-density suburbs of large metros -- especially in Sunbelt suburbs.
No large metros have gotten younger since 2010. Median age fell in only a handful of smaller metros, like Bremerton WA, Crestview FL, and energy towns like Midland TX and Williston ND.
Much, much more in the @uscensusbureau release and raw data. census.gov/newsroom/press…
