Just read a lot of words trying to decipher today's Alternative Arrangements Commission.
The big conclusion?
Leavers never thought about this huge issue before 23/6 and still aren't able to square an unsquareable circle.
I know because I was aligned to Leave at the time. And no, Flexcit didn't really cover it either. A gaping hole across the entire Leave movement.
But Leavers now just want to be closER to a solution and then, they assume, politics will step in and bridge the final gaps....

It can be perplexing that leading Brexiters still don't grasp the detail and/or continuously lie about it.

A common suggestion or inference is that Brexit leaders are thick. But this doesn't compute. Brexit leaders often have good degrees, perhaps from august universities, so are clearly intelligent. /2
Another suggestion is that Brexit leaders are now so committed to Brexit (sometimes over decades) that they could never admit the detail doesn't really work or that they missed a crucial bit. I think this is much closer to the truth, but there's something else... /3

1. The Bill. He wants to attach strings about "when and how" the money is paid over.

This is old Brexiteer (@DavidDavisMP) thinking - the 'bill' as down payment on future, rather than EU view of settling debt /2
@BorisJohnson @DavidDavisMP It's a sensitive subject in Brussels, but I think it's about wanting to argue for a changed dynamic in phase 2.

Boris will argue he will 'tackle hard' in second half, but needs more than warm words. Needs to point to leverage. /3

Today I'll attend a conference arranged by the 'Alternative Arrangements Commission' - even though I've been critical of the work of some of those involved in the past. They invited me though, and we need proper dialogue to solve our Brexit issues.
So the interim report has already been widely criticised, but I disagree. For this is not another no-deal and it can all be fixed by Thursday type report. For a start, not getting rid of the backstop, but ensuring it is never triggered... (you have to note the language carefully)
Then even more significantly, but even more hidden, essentially the report reinvents the single market to solve border checks. Obviously this is a largely Brexiteer report, so they focus on an unacceptable UK-Ireland single market, but that's what it is - in this case for SPS
