A friend of mine has a little girl (about 6yo) who's mixed race with gorgeous natural black hair. She said she hates being black because all the pretty characters don't look like her. "I told her black is beautiful and she replied, ‘well, I’m not’." #RepresentationMatters
My friend tried to point out some black or mixed race characters and her daughter pointed out that they have loose curls or straightened hair so still don't look like her. Also, the passport software didn't recognise her photo because of her hair.
If anyone knows some age-appropriate black female characters that her daughter would love to see, let me know. Books, cartoons, whatever.

I was 16, when I was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure (ESRF.) I had no idea what was happening to me because at the time, it made no sense. However, I remember the pain of that period like noonday. I lived on dialysis until i was 22. #dialysis #OrganDonation #renalhealth
It took over my teenage years. I don’t remember having much of a life as a teenager because dialysis was 3x a week & every session was 4hrs. Add the time it takes to recover from being exhausted by the process, my day was pretty much over. #dialysis #OrganDonation #renalhealth

This is gonna be a re-telling of the meeting that occured and then the reflections I had just now by talking about it to my friend.

I'll make lots of assumptions based off my intuition that might be completely off, but I don't want that to keep me fro expressing my thoughts.
Yesterday I spotted a friend of mine talking to this girl and I joined them. He seemed immersed in the conversation so I just greeted him and listened.

This girl caught our attention because if I remember the order correctly, she mocked campus culture without our encouragement.
We decided to get into the academic building again because we talked for a while and it was cold outside.

We were interested because she opened up about looking down on most people on campus really without our encouragement or us signalling we thought likewise.

This Day in Labor History: August 1, 1917. Frank Little, a veteran IWW organizer, was dragged out of his hotel in Butte, Montana by company thugs and lynched. Let's talk about this dastardly incident in American history and the broader repression radicals faced.
Frank Little was born in 1879, a mixed race son of a white father and Cherokee mother. We know little about his early life, hardly an uncommon situation for a poor person.
Little joined the IWW in 1906. He traveled the nation organizing workers in many of the IWW’s key actions. He was deeply involved in the IWW free speech campaigns in Missoula, Spokane, and Fresno.
