Tamil Nadu risks losing the #Neutrino project if the State Govt. does not give PCB clearance soon. Two other states (one is Andhra) are apparently lobbying for it. TN Govt has been sitting on the PCB clearance for months without any reply. 1/n
Project officials say they are willing to have an expert committee to evaluate risks & submit a report and say they will abide by the report. But TN Govt is not appointing such a Committee. Issue is also that apparently more than Rs.50 cr of public money has already bn spent 2/n
on developing the site & writing off that sum without any logical reason is an issue for audit team of the Center. At some point that sum will be written off and the Project will move to another State. This project was a dream of Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam who pushed for it in TN. 3/n
A project that aims to push India into the global league of particle physics & is equivalent to setting up a dozen IIT's in its field will be derailed by a small number of motivated people using ignorance of villagers while the majority stay silent without voicing an opinion. 4/n
Ironically it is the same people who accuse the BJP of spouting mumbo jumbo in place of science(and TBH the BJP is doing more than its fair share of that) who are running campaigns using half baked articles and pseudoscience to deceive ignorant people. 5/n
Sadly, our political parties are only too willing to play along with whatever in their opinion is populist. Lack of strong leaders like Kalaignar and Jayalalithaa who could take decisions on merits not popularity aren't around. 6/n
If project has significant risks then it should not be set up anywhere in India, let alone TN.But this has to be decided by an Expert committee, not by motivated protestors, disgruntled former Govt employees & Whatsapp Univ.Profs. TN Govt. must set up an Expert Committee & must 7/n
abide by their report. And for those who will ask if I will be ok to have a #Neutrino lab where I live let me say I am fine with it. All of us in Chennai live within 60 kms of 2 nuclear reactors at Kalpakkam & we haven't had an issue with it ever. @CMOTamilNadu @OfficeOfOPS n/n
