Nobody is even attempting to understand why assault on Doctors are happening across the country. Of course it is wrong. But why is it happening? Think. There is a complete breakdown in the Doctor patient relationship. The trust factor is gone. 1/n
When there is no trust, the motive behind every medical decision of the doctor is questioned. Doctors are increasingly being seen as avaricious people out to dupe the patients and make a quick buck. While some of it is undoubtedly true there is no evidence that doctors are 2/n
any more dishonest than any other groups of professionals, say lawyers or Bankers or Engineers etc.

intention to assault. It is in the communication between the Doctor & patient that the problem begins. Doctors often have no time to clearly explain to patients the condition, prognosis etc. Educated patients Google everything the doctor advises and cross check 4/n
For decades doctors were used to being treated in an exalted way. Now when they are questioned on everything they often react with irritation. This further ruptures the relationship with the patient. When there is a poor outcome and family is given a big bill to boot they 5/n
react with anger leading to assault. Sadly the ones to suffer are often the innocent doctors who may have done their best to help patient and were in no way responsible for the outcome. They may face the brunt if they just happen to be there at the time of a negative outcome. 6/n
If such assaults hv to be stopped then minimum standards of care need to be defined. Patients need to be educated about their rights and responsibilities. This is already a rule but observed more in breach. Medical community sadly does not want an empowered patient who asks 7/n
the right questions and is aware of what the doctor is doing. Unless that attitude changes such assaults are likely to continue. The healthcare community needs to look within. Asking for security guards or Police help is not the answer. Also there is no valid reason to 8/n
justify why an assault on a Doctor must be treated differently from an assault on anyone else. So,special laws with more stringent punishments cannot be justified. Govt needs to punish the culprits no doubt but to believe that alone will be enough is silly. Such attacks on 9/n
Doctors are not pre-meditated.They are spur of moment incidents caused by rage of losing a loved one and often mistakenly blaming the doctor.They cannot be solved nationwide by enhancing security. The only solution is to repair the Doctor-patient relationship and win trust 10/n
Culprits must be given exemplary punishment but a Doctors strike solves nothing except to put more patient lives at risk. I am a Doctor. May I request my colleagues who while continuing to ask for punishment for the guilty also look into the mirror? 11/n
Doctors reading this may be upset right now bcos of what happened in Kolkata.That was a serious crime and those who carried out the assault must be severely punished but when this entire episode is behind us, read this thread again.
